Bill Mulligan Classic: IVC Wins;
LBCC & Cotton Win--(Nov. 21, 1998)

On Thursday night Schea Cotton, who still wants to either get to D-I or to the NBA, played like the Schea Cotton of old, scoring 28 points and grabbing 11 boards on Thursday night, to lead Long Beach City College past Riverside 77-62, in a first-round game at the Bill Mulligan Classic at Irvine Valley College. Cotton hit on 9 of 20 shots from the field, including 4 of 8 three-pointers, and he was perfect from the line, hitting 6-6.  Long Beach City College, coached by Gary Anderson (his son Ricky is now at Arizona), is looking very impressive this season. With the win on Thursday, Long Beach City College advanced to plays Santa Maria Allan Hancock College last night a   semifinal game at 6:00 p.m. at Irvine Valley College.

And in that game last night, LBCC won over Hancock 89-85.    Cotton again led LBCC, this time with 34 points, including 20 from the free throw line (20-23).  Derrel Keys finished with 11 and Darnell Williams had 12 points for Long Beach.  But the game's highest scoring player was not Cotton, but Hancock freshman Adrian Parker, who hit for 37 points, 24 in the second half.

Long Beach will play tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the Championship game, while Hancock will play in the third place game at 5:00 p.m. tonight.

In other action at the Mulligan tournament, Irvine Valley College broke out to a 15-point first half lead and held on to beat Cerritos, 63-55. Irvine Valley hit 59 percent from the field on 16-for-27 shooting in the first half, but was then outscored by Cerritos 30-23 in the second half, but managed to hang on for the win. Ben Esplin led Irvine Valley, which is now 2-1,  with 15 points and seven boards, while Craig Rice and Tony Johnson each scored 12.  Irvine Valley plays Riverside City College in the consolation final today at 3:00 p.m.  Riverside defeated Southwestern JC 89-79 to advance.
