Pepperdine Schedule For
This Season Released--(Oct. 5, 1999)

We don't know how we missed this press release, but we found it going through some e-mails we've evidently failed to read.  If you're a fan of Pepperdine men's basketball, then this is for you. This also was evidently posted on the official Pepperdine Athletics Website:

PEPPERDINE MEN’S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED; WAVES FACE RANKED FOES KANSAS AND UCLA

MALIBU, CA, (September 2) – The Pepperdine men’s basketball team will be battle-tested and road weary during the upcoming 1999-2000 season, as the Waves will play 10 of their 15 non-conference games on the road and face a number of opponents that advanced to post-season play last year.

New head coach Jan van Breda Kolff inherits a roster that includes four returning starters from last season’s 19-11 team that advanced to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). It marked Pepperdine’s first post-season berth since a 1994 NCAA Tournament appearance.

Pepperdine’s top returning players include junior forward Kelvin Gibbs, an honorable mention All-West Coast Conference (WCC) selection, and senior guard Tommie Prince, tabbed the league’s “Defender of the Year.”

“We have a solid nucleus of returning talent, and I am anxious to begin working with the team on a regular basis in practice,” said van Breda Kolff. “The Pepperdine basketball program is headed in a positive direction, and my goal is to keep the momentum moving forward.”

Pepperdine opens its 29-game regular season schedule at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu with a November 20 home date against local rival Long Beach State. The Waves travel to Fresno State on November 23 for a tough road assignment against the Jerry Tarkanian-coached Bulldogs at Selland Arena.

The second annual Sparkletts Invitational will be played at Firestone Fieldhouse on November 27-28, with Colorado State, St. Bonaventure and UNC Charlotte competing in the two-day tournament. Colorado State was a NIT participant last year while UNC Charlotte advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Pepperdine heads to the Midwest in early December for a two-game road trip at Kansas (December 2) and Wichita State (December 4). Kansas, a perennial NCAA title contender, advanced to the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament.

The Waves host local foe Cal State Fullerton at Firestone Fieldhouse on December 7 before renewing its annual “War By The Shore” series at UC Santa Barbara on December 11.

Following an extended nine-day break, Pepperdine travels to Puerto Rico to compete in the eight-team San Juan Shootout on December 20-22. The tournament field includes American-Puerto Rico, Auburn, Detroit, Illinois State, Miami, SW Louisiana and Virginia Tech.

Pepperdine clashes with Detroit in its first round game at the San Juan Shootout. The Titans advanced to the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament, surprising UCLA in its first-round contest.

The Waves travel to Pauley Pavilion in Westwood on December 28 to UCLA, and then complete the millennium on December 30 against Pacific at the Spanos Center in Stockton.

After hosting Lehigh at Firestone Fieldhouse on January 3, Pepperdine completes the non-conference portion of its schedule on January 8 at Northwestern.

The Waves begin WCC play at home on January 14 against St. Mary’s. Pepperdine clashes with Gonzaga, the league’s two-time defending regular season champion and the “Cinderella” team during last year’s NCAA Tournament, at Firestone Fieldhouse on February 12 as part of the University’s annual Homecoming celebration.

The three-day WCC Tournament will be played March 4-6 at Santa Clara’s Toso Pavilion, with the winner earning the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.
