Slocum & Minor To Visit Troy This Weekend & Next--(Oct. 20, 1998)
Frank Burlison is reporting in the Orange County Register today that Andy Slocum (6'-10" Sr. F) from West Monroe High in Louisiana will be visiting USC this weekend, which is an interesting time to be scheduling a visit, at least from our point of view, since the Trojans will be playing at Oregon this weekend. Now next weekend, when the Trojans will hold their homecoming festival against Washington at the Coliseum would have made a lot of sense, but then we're just as much in the dark about what the Trojans are doing as anyone. If we were really trying to impress Slocum, we'd have scheduled his visit next weekend, at the same time as the visit of Luke Minor (7'-3" Sr. C) from Blue Ridge High in Dykes, Virginia, since that's homecoming weekend for the Trojans and they'll be playing Washington at the Colisseum a week from Saturday. And remember, the Trojans just have a single scholarship to offer (barring someone leaving the team) and the Trojans could really use a good, solid big man next season. Heck, they could use one this season too.
And as we reported earlier, it's possible that if neither of these guys accepts, or maybe even if one of them does, USC might still decide to take Paul Steward (6'-10" Sr. C) from Inglewood, who's father is reportedly very close to coach Bibby, and we hear that Steward is really eager to play for the Trojans; he might be able to red-shirt one season if the feeling is mutual, thus securing his services for four full years at USC. We'll just have to wait and see.
