SoCalHoops Recruiting Report

Top SoCal Senior Three Men:
The Wing Forwards--(Oct. 10, 1998)

Well, we weren't going to forget about the threes.   We've already done the point guards, shooting guards, and centers.  After this report, we'll only have the power forwards remaining.  So this is the fourth of five installments of  our feature on the top seniors in SoCal.  Again, some of these "wing forwards" or "swingmen" could be either shooting guards or forwards, and the divisions between the threes and fours are pretty arbitrary sometimes, except that generally speaking, a wing forward is a bit more mobile, a bit smaller, has a better perimeter game than a power forward, and rarely posts up.  And as with our earlier articles on this subject, if you see a name that you think belongs on the list, let us know and we'll probably include him.

SoCal Senior Wing Forwards:

Scott Anderson (6'-4" Sr. SF/PF) from Fontana High--Uncommitted-- a big banger type, who has developed a good inside game with some decent post moves, and a promising 15' jumper. Anderson is turning into a good all-around player,
who will shoot, play defense and rebound hard.  Excellent player.

Shea Anderson (6'-5" Sr. SF/PF) from Long Beach Poly--Uncommitted--Shea's developed into one of the best 3/4 combo players in the senior class, and his good j and handle, and rebounding ability will get him some major college opportunities. Shea is a great leaper, good rebounder, and to top it off, he scored 1400 on the SAT and is a tremendous student. Look for him to end up at an Ivy League school.

Koko Archibong (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF) from Pasadena Poly HS-- Uncommitted--Koko is a good athlete, who is very agile, runs the floor well, and moves with and without the ball. very active, and can use screens well. Has a good handle and is a fair penetrator off the dribble.  Koko has tremendous potential but he will have to show greater consistency this season in order to attract the attention of the high-major D-I's. As it is, he's a smart player, and should be at least a mid-D-I prospect.  Will sign in the spring.

Wayne Bernard (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF) from San Diego Horizon--Uncommitted-- Also listed as a two guard. has, on more than one occasion, single-handedly saved his club team (Future Stars) from ignominious defeat, and he's a great competitor. Will use his body well slashing to the basket or taking out his man on defense, and can spot up for the long shot out to three, or pull up for the j. Good defender, moves well with and without the ball. Definite D-I.

Anthony Bolton (6'-5" Sr. SF) from Vista High, Vista--Uncommitted-- nice athlete, with a good handle, some post moves and drives to the basket well. Moves with and without the ball, active player. Did well at the Nike National Championships for his Vista team this summer.

Gilbert Brown (6'-4" Sr. SF) from St. John Bosco HS, Bellflower--Uncommitted-- a fairly unknown prospect, with a good handle, and a good rebounder. Played well at the Fairfax tournament this summer.  Has not gotten a lot of exposure. Good defender.

Tony Booker (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from  Bishop Montgomery High--Uncommitted-- Tony is a good athlete who runs the floor well, has a good handle, and impressed a lot of people this summer with his good defense and nice inside play.  He's a decent scorer, who is not afraid to drive and take it to the hoop and will finish off the break.  He also plays the four and will see some time there this season.

Nehemiah Campbell (6'-5" Sr. SF) from Washington High School--Uncommitted--played in the Summer Best in the West and averaged about 6 points a game. Played solidly.  Decent handle, can post up, and has a nice shot.   Good defender.

Jaqay Carlisle (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF) from J.W. North HS, Riverside--Uncommitted-- Jaqay also plays for the IEBP All-Stars, coached by Aileene Carlyle, his mom.  Jaqay is one of the better shooters in the class, can drive and penetrate, and is an excellent passer.  On defense he moves his feet well, has good lateral quickness and establishes position well on the offensive player, and can move his lead foot back almost as quickly as Gilbert Arenas. Deserves more attention than he is evidently getting.

Chris Clark (6'-6" Sr. SF/PF) from Glendora High School --Committed to UC Riverside--  A very hard competitor, good athlete, sets screens and picks for Casey Jacobsen, and has a pretty good shot himself. Can drive and finish, moves well with and without the ball. Good handle and a very good rebounder.  Big-time pickup for UC Riverside, will work hard and make the program a success at the D-I level.  A very good defender.

Clayton Coleman (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF) from Pasadena High--Uncommitted--  Clayton is a fine athlete, who runs the floor well.  He also plays the four position, and has some good post moves, and rebounds very well.  Has a decent three-point shot, with good range and nice form. Passes well and has good court vision.  A definite D-I prospect, but won't get the attention he deserves until the spring.  Also listed as a two.

Keyon Cooley (6'-6" 6'-4" Sr. SF/PF) from Long Beach Poly High--Uncommitted--Keyon is a good athlete, whith a good handle and he's an excellenter passer with a nice outside shot. He also plays the four, and can rebound, drive and penetrate from the wing. A definite D-I prospect. Will play the post for his high school team on occasion. Is playing only his second year of high school basketball, but has just blossomed over the last year. He's developed some good post up moves to go along with his size, although he still seems to prefer the wing and still thinks like you'd expect a point guard to think.

Jerry Dupree (6'-7" Sr. SF)  from Valley View HS, Moreno Valley--Uncommitted--Another under-recruited player, Jerry is a good athlete, even if he does need to pump up with some weights to really succeed at the next level.  He's got a good handle and a very nice shot from close range.  He posts up well, can move to the basket, has good jumping and dunking ability and will defend.  Moves very well without the ball and sets good screens and picks.  A good player.  D-I definitely.

Keyawn Floyd (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from Lynwood High, Lynwood--Uncommitted-- Keyawn is a very good athlete, with a very slender build and will also need to bulk up a bit.  Has a good handle, a decent drive with a good first step and will finish.  He's got a decent shot, but mostly from within the arc. Will be a D-I player and will sign in the spring. Grades might be an issue, but we're not certain of that at this writing.

Tony Freeman (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF) from Santa Barbara High--Uncommitted -- We also listed him as a two. Tony was injured for most of the summer, but played anyway, not wanting to pass up the exposure. As a result, he didn't play nearly up to his potential. During his last high school season he averaged almost a triple double every time out.  Played well recently at the Rim Rattler Fall Showcase now that his wrist is healed.  Tony is a strong defender, with a nice handle, a good scoring mentality developing. Can drive, penetrate and gets to the basket, and can pull up effectively for the J.  Plays for Central Cal Sports Express when he's not playing for SB High.  Great player, will do very well at the next level.   Getting lots of attention, setting up visits, but will sign in the spring.

Spencer Gloger (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from Santa Margarita High--Uncommitted-- Also listed as a two. (Looking at Penn, Princeton, USD, Richmond, Pepperdine, Cal Poly SLO, USF, Harvard, Holy Cross)Good athlete, with a nice shot and good handle, helped lead SM to CIF State Division II Championship last year. Decent handles, drives well, and pulls up.  Can run, and moves with and without the ball, sets screens and picks well too. Can play the point or the three too. Excellent student and great competitor.

Nate Hair (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from Capistrano Valley High--Committed to USC--  Also listed as a two. Nate is a guy who was "good" last year, and just exploded this summer. He's a very hard competitor, runs well, has major jumping ability and tends to be an explosive type of player with great speed and a quick first step. No one, and we mean no one, would have picked him to go Pac-10 before this summer, but he just blew away the competition this summer at ABCD, West Coast All-Stars and in Vegas. A very good ball handler and tough defender with quick lateral moves.

Aaron Hamilton (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from Artesia High--Uncommitted-- Cousin of the O'Bannon's a good athlete in his own right who can run, is acitive and a very good ball handleer who can drive and push the ball on transition.  Aaron is also a capable rebounder, has a very good sense for the game and the court. Great vision and a good defender.

Gary Holmes (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF/PF) from Fontana High--Committed to Eastern Washington University-- Gary is a very intelligent player with good knowledge of the game, an excellent handle. On his high school team and most traveling teams we've seen him play with he's mostly called upon to be an inside banger, boxing out well, and cleaning the class with his good hops. But he can also step out and hit the outside shot, all the way out to three-point range with a great deal of regularity, and in college we'd project him probably as a combo two/three type player, using his good shooting skills as a sort of "power guard" and his ability to slash to the basket to grab boards or drive to the hole when needed. He plays very good defense, and he'll fit in very well with Agger's up-tempo and unselfish style of play.

Terry Hosendove (6'-5" Sr. SF/PF/C) from Compton High--Uncommitted-- Terry is a strong, capable player who can post up or step out and hit a shot out to about 15'.  Very good hops, jams and jumps well.  Will also play the center spot on his high school team, not by choice but out of necessity.  Sort of an in-between guy, can play the two, three or four. D-I prospect  will probably not sign until the spring.

Jerrod Jenkins (6'-6" Sr. SF/PF) from Inglewood High-- Uncommitted--Jerrod is a great shooter out to 17', rebounds and jumps like crazy, and he's also got some good post-up moves; in short, he's a great inside-outside guy, who is currently looking at, and will visit, Sacramento State, Loyola Marymount, and a few others.

Roderick Johnson (6'-5" Sr. SF) from Canyon Springs High, Moreno Valley--Uncommitted--Has good jumping ability, an excellent shot, and is very fundamentally sound, but is thin and could use some weight and bulk. Handles the ball well, passes well, and has a good shot. Nice transition skills.

Willie Johnson (6'-4" Sr. SG) from  Fresno Edison--Uncommitted--Willie is a very good athlete, strong, he weighs around 210 lbs, and for a guy tht size has a very good handle and can drive.   Nice J out to three point range, really more of a wing and perimeter player. Very effective on the fast break.  Mid to high D-I definitely, will probably sign in the spring. Had some excellent games for EBO this summer.   Pushes the ball, great defender, moves well with and without the ball.

Peter Johnson (6'-5" Sr. SF/PF) from Tustin High--Uncommitted-- Decent athlete who runs well and can shoot. Drives to the hole and can finish.  He's an excellent rebounder and a good defender.  Didn't play much that we saw this summer but this fall played well.

Jason Kapono (6'-8" Sr. SG/SF) from Artesia High--Uncommitted--(Reportedly has narrowed his list to four schools, UNLV, Utah, Missouri and North Carolina State) Jason is an excellent athlete with great all-around skills, and a terrific three point shot.  He scores well, and can drive and play some post too. Decent rebounder, he has the heart of a major competitor. Can run the point too, and often does on his Artesia team.  Top prospect in the class along with a few other top guys.

Keith Kincaide  (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from Compton Dominguez--Uncommitted--  Keith has a slim, almost slight build, and he can run the floor well, and is very athletic.  Great hops, he can drive, and prefers to slash from the wings, or just stay outside the arc and bomb it in. Has a good handle, and will drive and penetrate, and rebound effectively.  His real forte' would seem to be as a two, but will also play the three.  When he's hot, look out.  Will be one of the senior leaders on Dominguez this year.

Garrett Lee (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF) from Bishop Montgomery in Torrance--Uncommitted-- Also listed him as a two. With the Cravens, Garrett has been caught between two generations of talented players at BM.  He's very quick, has a nice dribble and crossover, decent handle and knowledge of the game.   Good spot up shooter.

Earl Lewis (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from Serra HS, Gardena, CA--Uncommitted-- A good athlete who can push the fast break, and a decent shooter out to three point range. Good defender, also plays the four position.  Moves pretty well with and without the ball, can also post up some.   Earl drives well and rebounds effectively, and is a good defender.

Mike Malloy (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF) from USDHS, San Diego--Uncommitted-- Very good handle, great athlete and jumps very well. Will probably end up doing some time at the point this season now that David Abramowitz is gon.  Can also play the two, and has a good shot out to three point range. Very good defender.

Brandon Martin(6'-6" Sr.  SG/SF) from Trabuco Hills High--Uncommitted-- Injured late in the summer and didn't play in the Fall Hoops Classic, but his brother did, and he lit it up. But he's just a junior.  Brandon is a good athlete who runs well, is a decent shooter and has some post moves and can also play the four.

Jack May (6'-7" Sr. SF/PF) from Ayala, Chino Hills--Uncommitted-- Strong athlete, plays with aggression and is very active on the floor. Jack cam jam or post up, and has a nice turnaround shot from in the post, and he will see time at the four for Ayala this year. Has a nice spin move and good jumping ability. Could be Pac-10 material. Good driver and a decent handle.

Glen McGowan (6'-7" Sr. SG/SF) from L.A. Venice--Uncommitted-- Glen seems to have fixed his "bad feet" problem which he had last year. Glen is a huge, big time prospect, and even though he was plagued by bad feet all last year and into the spring, he's come on with a vengance this fall. At the Pump Discovery Shootout he was everywhere, playing for Pump-N-Run II, and several other teams. Glen is a solid D-I prospect, who can run the floor, has a decent handle, passes well, rebounds and has developed a solid worth ethic. He will be the senior leader on his high school team. Glen is looking at several mid-major D-I schools, but we don't expect him to sign until the spring, and it's just as likely that he might attend prep school to work on some of his fundamentals.

Ray Morris (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF) from Bonita Vista HS, Chula Vista--Uncommitted--also plays the two. A slasher and driver, but can also spot up beyond the arc with a good shot.  Plays decent defense and has a good handle. A good athlete, runs the floor very well and pushes on the break.

Joe Nichols (6'-5" Sr. SF) from California High School, Whittier--Uncommitted--A pretty good ballplayer. Good quickness, but not a lot of exposure until this summer, where he played very well during the West Coast All-Star camp. Needs some work on his handle  and can hit from outside. A good defender, and can rebound too.

Ryan Odums (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF) from Serra, Gardena--Uncommitted--also plays the two. Odums has a good first step and the ability to get inside with the dribble. He's grown about three inches in the last year, and while he can play the wing, he thinks like a point.  Has developed a good shot and decent range.

Joe Shipp (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF) from Fairfax High, Los Angeles--Uncommitted-- (Looking at Vanderbilt, Pepperdine, and Oregon State).  Ship is back after his injury, and it seems like he was never away.  Joe is a large, wide-body type with a great handle, who can run the floor well, defend and he has a great handle.   He has a decent shot out to three-point range, but is a better slasher to the hoop off the wing.  He's a high impact player, and can take over a game at times. Big time prospect.

Jarrett Skrifvars (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF) from Brea-Olinda--Uncommitted--Quick, smart player, handles the ball well, but a bit thin and will need to bulk up a bit. Has got a fair handle and is an excellent rebounder.  Will be one of the team leaders, along with Kyle Dodd this year for Brea-Olinda.  Very tough, good defender. Potential D-I.

Shamell Stallworth (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF) We also listed him as a shooting guard From Fresno Washington Union-- Uncommitted-- Shammell is a streaky shooter, and while the team has benefitted from the physical play of DeShawn Stevenson (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF), DeShawn doesn't pass a lot and this summer Shammell rarely saw the ball.  When he did, he had a very accurate shot out to 3 point range.  Played very well in Vegas, and can defend. Really a great three-point specialist, led the team last winter at the Reebok Vegas tourney.  Very quick, smart player.

Misha Taylor (6'-4" Sr. SF) from Crossroads High, Santa Monica--Uncommitted--Big, strong player, also a soccer player (or so we hear).  Can rebound, defend and drive. Decent handle, and shot out to about 17'. Smart player, but needs to develop quickness laterally.  Defends well and moves ok without the ball. Can run the floor well.

Aaron Thomas (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF) from Pomona High, Pomona--Uncommitted--Aaron showed some inconsitency at the Rim Rattler camp, where he was a somewhat streaky shooter, but when he was on, he hit it out to NBA range with regularity. He's an excellent with   good ballhandling skills, and he moves well with and without the ball. A good rebounder and a good defender.

Jeremiah Turner (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from Sylmar High School--Uncommitted-- Jeremiah is an athlete who has us puzzled. He's had all the big time exposure, went to ABCD camp, played in the Best of Summer, in Vegas, at the War on the Floor, and did pretty well. He's a real good athlete, runs and jumps exceptionally well, and reminds us a lot of his sometime teammate, Gilbert Arenas, but a little bit bigger and not as aggressive in going for steals.  Drives well, shoots, and can also post up.  And yet we don't hear that anyone is looking at him.  His grades are not an issue, and he is definitely high D-I material.

Brian Wethers (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from Murietta Valley High, in Murrietta, CA--Committed to Cal--  We also listed him as a two, and he can play that position too. Brian is an excellent athlete who can run the floor, has major hops, and is very effective off the break.  Has a good handle, and is an excellent passer. Can drive and finish.  As with other guys at this position, will also play the two or the four, and has a pretty good post move or two. Will lead his team to the playoffs and then will lead the Bears to the NCAA tournament. Brian is a physically dominating player with a superior blend of athleticism and quickness. He has a great outside J, has developed a good handle, and can take his defender to the rack and finish.  A good pickup for the Bears.

Marqui Worthy (6'-2" Sr.  SG/SF) from Sonora High-- Uncommitted-- We also listed him as a two guard. This guy will lead the offense now that Jeff Berokoff is gone, and he can do it too.  Great handle, nice shot, a streaky three point shooter, but will hit if he's got time to set up.  Nice pull up J from inside 15'.  Great defender, uses his feet and hands well. Smart player. Runs the floor and can also post up pretty well.
