Spencer Gloger Visits
The Quaker State--(Oct. 3, 1998)
Spencer Gloger (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from Santa Margarita High School has been busy this fall. This weekend he's on an official visit to Penn, and he's already taken an official visit at Princeton. He's had home visits with (in addition to Penn and Princeton), USD, Richmond, Pepperdine, USF, Harvard, Dartmouth, Holy Cross, and Cal Poly SLO, and there's a possibility that others might yet get involved. He will decide shortly which three additional official visits to take, and plans to take all five allowed official visits. Our sources tell us that Spencer will most likely sign in the fall i.e., in November, so that he can concentrate on his final season in high school and be finished early with the selection process. He's got some impressive schools to choose from and it would be difficult to make a mistake selecting any one of them. Some might predict he'd head east to the Ivy League, especially since his older brother is currently attending Columbia (where he was one of the top freshmen recruits last year); and others might say that Holy Cross has an inside track, with former teammate Dekker McKeever (6'-7" PF) now enrolled there. But there are probably as many advantages the west coast schools (close to home, good small college education in larger competitive conferences, etc.) as there are to the east coast. For now, it's safe to say that he's still wide open, and will narrow the list as November and final decision time approach.
Spencer was on the Santa Margarita team last year that won the State Division II Championship, and he's one of the few returning players (others include Ryan Dwight, (5'-9" Sr. PG), Tim Rahall (6'-2" Sr. SG), Jeff Blackburn (6'-3" Sr. SF), and Kelly Kramer (6'-4" Sr. SF)). He's an excellent athlete, and given the fact that he's grown about 5 inches in the last year or so, he still thinks like a point guard which gives him an advantage in that he still has good perimeter skills for a 6'-5" guy. He's a good passer, sees the floor very well, and moves well with and without the ball. While he sometimes plays the three position for his high school and club teams (he was with BWBA for a short span as well and played forward), he's really more of a two guard, and it's possible that he'll also play the one a bit in college. No matter which program he picks, he'll be an immediate impact player, and will make some college coach very happy for four years. We'll try to keep up with his busy schedule and hopefully when he makes a decision he'll let us know. Stay tuned.
