SDSU: Mid-Day Madness Today At
2:30 P.M. At Cox Arena--(Oct. 17, 1998)
Forget "Midnight Madness." Forget paying royalties for a trademark to someone who has nothing to do with the event. This is "Mid-Day Madness" San Diego style. Pepperdine, UCSB, Long Beach State, Fullerton, and Irvine all held their own versions of a midnight event last night. San Diego is doing it today at 2:30 p.m. at Cox Arena. Here's the text of the official announcement from the Aztec's official website:
The San Diego State men's and women's basketball teams get the 1998-99 season under way this Saturday, October 17 when the squads officially take the court for the first time at Midday Madness. The event takes place in SDSU's Cox Arena at 2:30 p.m. with free admission for all
fans.Midday Madness is sponsored by the Planet 103.7 radio and includes free snacks, a kids' interactive fun zone, player autographs, Aztec merchandise for sale and a chance to see the first on-court appearances for SDSU's basketball teams.
The theme for both cage squads could be "New Faces of 1998-99". Head Coach Barb Smith will take the Cox Arena floor at 3:00 p.m. leading a group that includes just one returning starter and six newcomers. The situation is similar for the men's team as Head Coach Fred Trenkle has a lone returning starter who will be joined by a group of recruits dubbed the "Emerald Eight" by The Sporting News. The Aztec men are scheduled on the floor at 3:35 p.m.
The afternoon's festivities will also include an opportunity for fans to Select-a-Seat for the 1998-99 season and there will be three-point and slam dunk contests conducted for youths and adults.
