Our Bad: Midnight Madness
Also Strikes Long Beach--(Oct. 14, 1998)
One of our readers on the Message Forum also alerted us to the fact that not only will Pepperdine, UCI and Fullerton have "Midnight Madness" events, but Long Beach State will too. We searched around to find some information, and there was nothing over at the Official Long Beach State website, but happily we did find some details at the "unOfficial Long Beach State Basketball" website, sometimes known as "The Beach." And here's what they have to say about it:
Midnite Madness
Long Beach State's men's and women's basketball teams will launch their seasons with a Midnight Madness at the Pyramid, rolling out the first ball at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 17, the first day teams may practice, according to NCAA rules.
"We're looking for a good year from both teams, so we want a lot of fanfare, a lot of excitement, right from the get-go," said John Costello, the 49ers' director of marketing.
The Pyramid doors will open at 11:15 p.m. Oct. 16 with the introductions scheduled to begin at one minute after midnight.
It's the first Midnight Madness to be held in the 4-year-old Pyramid.
Besides basketball, there will be a buffet, various games and musical entertainment. Once the practice begins, the 49ers will hold a slam-dunk contest as well as a 3-point-shooting contest, followed by a scrimmage.
On Saturday afternoon, Oct. 31, the men's and women's teams will take part in their annual free-to-the-public Black-Gold intrasquad games. The women's team opens its regular season on Friday night, Nov. 13, at home against Fresno State. The men's team opens the next night at home against Cal State Northridge.
Wow, so much basketball stuff, and so little time. At least we all have some options the Friday night.
