Hey Folks, Lavin Was Just Kidding. . . Really--(Oct. 9, 1998)
Geez, some people have no sense of humor about things. One reader actually said that we changed the word "quipped" to "said" in order to make Bruin Head Coach Steve Lavin look foolish in describing what he "spoke" in his speech (notice we avoided the use of the word "said") at the LA Athletic Club on Wednesday, when he "quipped" (ok, we agree, it was a "quip"), that if he didn't win three national championships in the next three years with all the talent he recruited this last year then "I can't coach."
Hey folks, he was saying it tongue in cheek. In fact, one guy actually wrote to us with the definition of the word "quipped." That reader wins a personal subscription to the updates to the full, unabridged Oxford English Dictionary.
Seems also that Steve Alas, who maintains the "Unofficial Bruin Basketball" site drew the same ire of the Bruin faithful when he reported the line also, and then the next day had to inform people that Lavin was JUST KIDDING.
Boy, some people have no sense of humor. Especially when it comes to their Bruins.
