Yet Another Gilbert Arenas Update--(Oct. 2, 1998)
Well, well, well. It really is looking more and more like Gilbert Arenas (6'-4" Sr. SG) from Grant High in Van Nuys is down to just two schools, and one of them is not going to be DePaul. Gilbert had originally scheduled an official visit to DePaul for this weekend, but when Coach Pat Kennedy's mother passed away, the visit was postponed. DePaul is trying pretty hard to reset the visit for October 10, but that may not be feasible, since it's really beyond the time that Arizona wanted to hear from Gilbert. And if Gil delays much longer, Jimmy Haywood might just get back into the picture at Tucson.
Now don't get us wrong, we're not telling you that DePaul is definitely out, just that it's looking that way. Gil's father told us that the 10th probably won't work because Gil has an appointment with his orthodontist which really can't be rescheduled again. "He needs to have his braces worked on so that by the time the season starts in the next month or so, Gil's teeth aren't hurting him," Mr. Arenas told us.
"We really wanted to take the DePaul visit before Gil went to Arizona, but DePaul wanted it the other way around," Mr. Arenas said. No doubt, and we're guessing the Blue Demons really wanted the last shot in order to be able to put on the best show. But now that may not be in the cards. "Gilbert really likes both Kansas State and Arizona, and I'm not sure which one he'd pick if he had to choose today," Gil's father told us. "He really enjoyed the visits at both schools, and he also liked the fact that at Arizona he had a lot of friends. But Kansas isn't out of it either. I just wish that there had been time to visit DePaul, because I've always thought coach Kennedy was a really great coach ever since I first followed him at Florida State."
We're betting that Gilbert will announce early, possibly by as early as this coming Monday, and more than likely by the end of next week. If and when he does, we'll let you know.
