Wayne Bernard Will Be At
Davidson This Weekend--(Oct. 23, 1998)
We just got an e-mail from a friend who tells us that Wayne Bernard (6'-3" Sr. SG/SF) from San Diego Horizon, one of the top combo two/three guard-forwards on the west coast will be taking an official visit this weekend at Davidson, which is an interesting choice for Wayne. Davidson is known as a top-flight university, and is located in Davidson, North Carolina. Last season, Davidson won the Southern Conference title, won it's division championship, won the conference tournament, and made it to the NCAA finals, losing in the first round. Davidson has the distinction this season of having one of the top backcourt in the conference , and this year signed some really great international playwer by picking up Michael Bree of Ireland and forward Chris Pearson of England. Coach Bob McKillop has done a great job over the 9 years he's been at the school, and Davidson is looking to once again return to the NCAA tournament this year.
We understand that coach McKillop has offered Wayne an immediate opportunity to play the 2 or 3 position next year, and he would be a big impact player at Davidson in our view, working with current two guard Davor Halbauer (6'-3" Jr. SG) from Croatia, who will be a senior next year, and Jeff Bergman (6'-3" Jr. SG) who will also be a senior. There are two other guards who will be there a bit longer, James Hampton (5'-10 So. G), a role player who would not truly challenge Wayne for playing time unless a whole lot changes in the next year, and Michael Bree (6'-0" Fr. SG) from Ireland. Bree might actually end up playing the same spot as Wayne, and he could cut into his time. Bree is a redshirt freshman this year, and thus has four more years of eligibility. He signed out of Summerhill College High School in Sligo, Ireland, and average 24 ppg, 9.0 assists, and 4.5 steals as a high school senior. On the other hand, if Bree ends up being able to play the one, then he and Wayne could make a very potent backcourt for three years to come.
Wayne can pretty much play either the two or three very capably, and he has, on more than one occasion, single-handedly saved his club team (Future Stars) pretty much taking control of games. He's a great competitor, and will use his body well, slashing to the basket or taking out his man on defense, and can spot up for the long shot out to three, or pull up for the j. Wayne is a good defender, who moves well with and without the ball, and would be a definite impact player at a program like Davidson.
