DeShawn Stevenson:
Just A Day's Work For No. 1--(Sept. 13, 1999)

deshawn1.jpg (9832 bytes)For those who didn't witness it, you really missed something. For those who were there, well, then you saw an unbelievable performance.   At 12:45 p.m. in the LBCC Auxiliary Gym, EBO-EA matched up against Top Prospects in a "Sweet 16" game, and the results were unbelievable. No we don't mean the win, which was predictable,  but the performance of DeShawn Stevenson (6'-5" Sr. PG/SG/SF)--and notice we've also used the "PG" designation next to his name. . . not because we really truly believe that's how he's being recruited, but because today he showed he really can do it all---who secured his status as the No. 1 prospect in this year's senior class in the West.  We really mean that.  We don't think there's anyone, and we mean anyone at any position we can think of, who is as good, as athletic, as accurate a shooter, as spectacular on both offense and defense as DeShawn Stevenson is right now.

So what did he do against Top Prospects?

Well, how about 42 points in a single game.  What about 9 three pointers.  NBA three's, every one of them.  And to top it off, he must have missed at least as many shots as he made.  But you can afford to do that when you get the ball and produce with it the way DeShawn does.

Deshawn Stevenson for three. Notice where
the three point line is (look closely down at the lower

right hand side of the picture, just beyond Chris
Lopez' outstretched right leg). He's about 10 feet behind
it, and he made this one, along with 8 others.

And Top Prospects was not some little Park & Rec league team either. No way.  They had Chad Bell (7'-0" Jr. C) from Westchester, E.J. Harris (6'-3" Sr. PG), Tommy Smith (6'-4" Sr. SG), Chris Davis (6'-7" Sr. PF/SF) and Jamal Walls (6'-6" So. PF) all from Crenshaw, and a couple of others.   This was no pushover team, no sireee. In fact, EBO had to come from behind, from as many as 15 points behind in the first half.

It was a memorable performance, perhaps the most memorable we've seen from DeShawn since we really began following him three years ago.    This guy just seems to get better and better, and it was reminiscent of the performance we saw Jason Kapono put on in the same gym, at the same time of day exactly one year ago in a Sweet 16 Game as he also hit for 7 three pointers in a single game, demonstrated that he had point skills, post up ability, great defensive talent, in short, was the complete package.  Both were considered long-shots for UCLA at the time, both were just about to have their home visits at the time of the game.  Well, we know what happened with Mr. K.  DeShawn has his home visit with Lavin tomorrow up in Fresno, on the 14th.  DeShawn is also being visited by a few others, and from what we've heard, it's probably going to come down to UCLA or Fresno State.  But only time will tell.
