Blake Stepp Commits
To Gonzaga--(Sept. 14, 1999)

We just got word from Bob Gottlieb, who runs the Branch West Basketball Academy and the BWBA travel teams, that Blake Stepp (6'-4" Sr. PG)  from South Eugene H.S. in Eugene, Oregon,  who is undoubtedly one of the top rated point guards in Oregon and the West Coast, and who played with Oregon Nike,  committed last night to Gonzaga.  The commitment was not entirely unexpected, but the timing of it, at least according to most observers, is somewhat surprising, considering  he had no official visits set at the beginning of the current evaluation period, and told most people who asked that he was undecided between Gonzaga, Washington, Oregon, and Oregon State.

Blake, at 180 lbs, is considered by many to be one of the top point guards in the Western USA, and a potential future NBA prospect. He averaged 18 ppg as a junior. He is a coach's son, who plays like he's a coach's son, running the floor and directing a team, but he's also one of the best shooters at the position, so we'd expect him to play some two as well.  Playing for his dad he averaged 6 assists per game and 7 rebounds as well. His father indicated that Blake has decided to play football this year to have some fun (but evidently not with his dad's or Gonzaga's blessings).
