News & Notes, And Some
Corrections & Addenda--(Sept. 28, 1999)
Here's a collection of things we missed, items that need correcting, updates, and addenda to stuff we've already posted.
1. Marquis Poole (6'-2" Fr. PG) who will attend Eastern Washington University-- In our comments about Marquis' above the official press release sent to us by the school, we indicated that he could practice with the team this school year. We were wrong. As a Prop 48, he cannot practice. He will work out on his own and totally focus on his academics. We regret any confusion this might have caused.
2. Marshall Fundamental transfers: Someone evidently decided to have some fun with us at our expense, and the earlier transfer we reported were in fact only partly correct. Marshall did receive the three transfers in that we reported, but neither DeVerion Mackey (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF) nor Jason Sanford (6'-4" Sr. SF) will be leaving. Both are very much on the Marshall roster, enrolled and doing fine, and both will be playing this season with the team.
3. The "MP" team in the ARC Boys Varsity II Fall League is made up of Moorpark High players, and not Montclair Prep, as we earlier reported.
4. We neglected to note one other player on the Monsters of the Midway roster from the Double Pump Fall Premier Tourney, Clint Hamblin (6'-3" Sr. SG) from Village Christian.
5. We have updated some of the recent tournament listings for the remainder of 1999, and in doing so we evidently got some of the information wrong for the Courtside Sports Preseason Fall Classic for girls, which takes place up in the Bay Area. The correct dates are October23-24, 5th-8th grade, girls only. For boys, there's another tournament October 30-31, 6th-8th grade in the East Bay Area. For information contact Matt Scarlata 209-833-1744, fax 209-835-8312, e-mail hoops4us@pacbell.net.
6. We neglected to report the verbal commitment of Ryan Hegarty (6'-10" Sr. PF) from Scottsdale Saguaro who commited to the University of San Diego last week. Thanks to Jerry Norley for reminding us. Ryan averaged 10 points and 10 reboubnds a game last year, and chose USD over NAU, Cal Poly and Texas-Arlington
7. Another neglected report that we haven't yet been able to verify: A reader sent us a note that Bloomington HS in the Inland Empire area just hired what may be the youngest varsity head coach ever in CIF by selecting 19 year old former player, Ashley Thomas to run the varsity program. As we say, we haven't verified this yet, so again, someone may be trying to have some fun, but if it's true, hey it's certainly news. One bright spot for Ashley is he only has to win 3 games to do better than last year where the team went 2-21 overall and 0-8 in league.
