Long Beach Fall Hoops
Classic Schedules--(Sept. 8, 1999)

Well, we've finally gotten around to typing up the schedules for this weekend's 7th Annual Long Beach Fall Hoops Classic, which will run from September 10-12 at Long Beach City College.  This is another one of those certified NCAA-events, where college coaches will (hopefully) be out in droves watching all the talent in SoCal hooping it up.  And there will be plenty of coaches around too, since some of the top teams and players will be in attendance.  As Frank Burlison noted yesterday in his OC Register column, expect to see UCLA's Steve Lavin (and probably Jim Saia as well since he didn't get that UTEP job he was interviewing for, which went instead to Oklahoma assistant James Rabedoux), Henry Bibby, Silvy Dominguez, and several other top D-I coaches.  Ben Braun of Cal probably won't be there (and we shouldn't be there either, because it's Rosh Hashanah, but we'll probably be able to sneak in a couple of games. . . and by the way, the issue of scheduling the open evaluation during this period is something the NCAA should consider for next year. . . remember Sandy Koufax?. . . but we digress).

If you're going, the games start on Friday at 4:00 p.m. at two locations:  Long Beach City College (in the Main Gym and across the way in the Auxiliary Gym), and at Long Beach Millikan HS.  On Saturday, the games will start at 9:00 a.m., and a third venue will be added: Long Beach Jordan HS.  With the last game starting at 10:15 p.m., we'd expect the games to conclude just before midnight on Friday and Saturday.  The Championship is scheduled for Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at the Long Beach City College Main Gym.

Here's the schedule insofar as we know it as of September 8.  Note, there could be changes, additions or corrections, but this is what Dinos sent us as of this morning. Here's the schedule for Friday, September 10, 1999:

Sunday will feature all playoffs, and we'll wait to do the schedule for that since at this point it's really meaningless, except to note that it looks like there's only a winner's bracket in single elimination.  A bit more meaningful, at least at this point, are the pool play assignments.  Here are the pools:
