Andre Hazel Gives A Verbal Commitment
To Nevada-Reno--(Sept. 30, 1999)

We just got off the phone with Andre Hazel (6'-0" Sr. PG) from Artesia, who told us that he has given a verbal commitment to the University of Nevada-Reno.  Andre is one of the top point guards on the West Coast, and he was being recruited also by Oregon.  He has decided to commit now rather than wait, and will sign a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period.  This is a big pickup for the Wolpack and we anticipate Andre could come in as a starter right away as a freshman next year. 

"I really loved the visit to Reno; I liked the coaches, the environment, everything about it.  I really have a great relationship with the coaching staff," Andre told us tonight by phone.  Andre told us that he got along very well with first year coach Trent Johnson, who took over at Reno this summer. "Coach Johnson is like a second father to me. He's just a great guy."   Johnson was an assistant at Stanford for the past three seasons, and this is his first year as a head coach at a Division I school.

Andre will join a young and very talented backcourt which will likely still include Donnell Meekins (6'-2") who will be a junior, from Inglewood (via Columbia CC), Terrance Green (6'-2") from Benson HS in Portland who will be a sophomore, Adrian McCullough (5'-10") from Oakland (via the College of Southern Idaho), who will be a senior, Mike Brown (6'-2") from Reno who will be a junior, Donny Guerinoni (6'-0") from Sebastopol (via West Valley JC) who will be a senior, and Evan Glusman (6'-2" ) from Las Vegas Durango HS who will be a sophomore next season. Tommy Zapata (6"-3" Sr. G) from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame will be graduating, and it's also possible that several of the scholarship spots among the underclassmen may open up as well.
