Reminder: SoCal Fall JUCO
Showcase This Weekend--(Sept. 23, 1999)
There are three big events this weekend, and the weekend gets off to an early start today with the IEBP Fall Classic Shootout at UC Riverside. Then on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the Pump's will host the adidas Double Pump Fall Premier Tournament, featuring the top high school talent from all over SoCal and the West Coast, and maybe even a few east coast surprises thrown in. Finally, there's the Fullerton College "Southern California Fall Junior College Showcase," set for the 25th and 26th (Saturday and Sunday) at Fullerton Junior College.
JUCO events may not seem all that important to many unfamiliar with them, but when you consider how many players get D-I scholarships from JC's (according to the most recent estimates, close to half the available scholarships at the D-I level last year, which was between 1,000 and 1,200 total went to JUCO players), you begin to realize just how important events such as this really are. As with the high school exposure events, college coaches attend the JUCO events during the "open-exposure" period (which ends on Sunday) and they're busy searching for the top 600 or so top players to fill out the ranks of Division I college rosters, with the other 600 slots generally going to the top high school seniors. But enough of that. . . who's going to be there?
Interestingly, we had been told that the event would feature 20 teams, but when we counted the list, it turned out to be 21, so, we feel safe in saying that unless someone has dropped out, it will feature the 21 best teams in SoCal, including the following:
Fullerton College Irvine Valley College Antelope Valley College Mt. San Jacinto College Cuesta College Chaffey College Riverside City College San Jose City College LA Valley College Glendale College Santa Monica College |
Alan Hancock College Bakersfield College Southwestern College Mira Costa College Long Beach City College Saddleback College College of the Canyons College of the Desert College of the Sequoias Cerritos College |
While this will run concurrently with the
inaugural Double Pump Fall Premier Tournament, we know that a lot of coaches will be
splitting their time between events; hopefully we'll be able to cover them both, but we're
not making any promises, and more likely than not, we'll be spending the majority of the
weekend at the Pumps at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Participants in the Fall JC Showcase
are some of the best teams in California and certainly most of the top players in the
region. All games will start at 10:00 a.m. daily and continue throughout the day and
into the evening.

Fullerton College is located in, of all places, Fullerton. Here's a map showing where the campus is generally, and the specific address of the school. We don't know exactly where the gym is on campus, but we're sure that it's pretty easy to find.
See you there. . . maybe.
