Coaching Clinic Set--(Sept. 9, 1999)

Our friend, who simply goes by the name "Desert B-Rat", posted a message yesterday on the Men's Forum which is really worthy of a Daily Article (so that it doesn't just scroll off into the sunset, at least not until next month. . . ) Here's the news:

Desert Valley Hoops: News and views from in and around the Greater Palm Springs area and the Desert Valley League including - Palm Springs - Cathedral City - Desert Hot Springs - Palm Desert - La Quinta - Indio - and Coachella Valley High Schools.

The annual Palm Springs Basketball Coaches Clinic is scheduled for September 17-19, 1999 at the Riviera Resort & Racquet Club in Palm Springs. The public is welcome to attend. It is part of an overall Sports Coaches Clinic which features other sports as well. Organizers Chuck and Denyse Campione seem to have a pretty good speaker line-up which includes legendary Coach John Wooden as the Special Guest Speaker on the topic of "Pyramid of Success". Also listed on the Speaking Staff are Bill Walton (Hall of Fame/TV analyst), Jerry Tarkanian (Fresno State Univ.), Norm Stewart (Univ. of Missouri, Ret.), Kiki Vandeweghe (former NBA All Star), Ben Braun (Univ. of Calif., 1999 NIT Champs), Dave Bliss (Baylor Univ.), Van Chancellor (Houston Comets, WNBA Champs), Kathy Olivier (UCLA, 1999 Elite 8), Dr. Ernie Vandeweghe (Author & former pro-teams physician), and Chris
Davis (The Coach's Edge).

The registration fee is $77 per person. Two or more coaches from the same school are $72 per person. Students 19 years and under are $25.00 each. At the door the price is $87. Registration deadline is September 9, 1999 (postmarked). Postmarks after 9/9 will be at the $87 rate. No refunds. No purchase orders accepted. Checks should be made payable to:

If you mention that you will be participating in the Sportsmania Coaches Clinic you can get a special room rate of $84 per room (regulary $149). Hotel reservation deadline is Sept. 9, 1999. Call the hotel at 1-800-444-8311. Registration for the Sportsmania Basketball Coaches Clinic is from 3:00-6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17th. The first session with Dr. Ernie Vandeweghe is scheduled from 5:00-6:15 p.m.. John Wooden follows with his "Pyramid of Success" session 6:30-7:45 p.m.. A Slam Dunk Party ends the day from 8:00-11:00 p.m.. Saturday registration is from 8:00-9:00 a.m. with sessions from 8:45 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. featuring Dave Bliss, Bill Walton, Kiki Vandeweghe, Kathy Olivier and Jerry Tarkanian. Saturday wraps with a Hospitality Hour from 4:45-5:45 p.m.. Sunday sessions run from 7:15 a.m.-1:00 p.m. with Chris Davis, Van Chancellor, Norm Stewart and Ben Braun. Visit Exhibitor Booths will open 7:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m..
