Fish Wrap: SoCal Fishies
Make Good Bears--(Sept. 9, 1999)

We get news:  Being a Cal alum has it's advantages. . . we're still trying to figure out what those advantages are (besides being able to say we graduated from Cal, and then depending on what part of California you're in, it may not be such a big advantage). . . but at least we get reports from the Bay Area on some of the SoCal players now enrolled and getting schooled in the ways of the Bear.  Grrrrrrah. Here's what we've heard:

Shantay Legans (5'-10" Fr. PG) who graduated from Dos Pueblos continues to impress the coaching staff. He reportedly put up some remarkable numbers in a shooting drill which has people running all over saying "Wow, we didn't know he could shoot too!"  Nick Vander Laan (6'-10" Fr. PF) is up reportedly getting bigger and stronger, and he's now up to 247 lbs., although most of it is muscle, so he actually looks like he has slimmed down rather than bulked up. Very cut,  much stronger, and it looks like the strength coach is doing a great job. Nick also had a very good Pete Newell Big Man camp in Hawaii, and reportedly he was brought to the front of the college line to demonstrate some footwork that the group was having trouble with.  Brian Wethers (is playing very solidly, and Joe Shipp is showing what everyone expected, i.e., a very skilled athlete who will contribute this year. Solomon Hughes (6'-11" So. F)  is up to 230 and also looking much stronger. And in case everyone missed it, Solomon's "little" brother Gabriel (6'-10" Sr. PF) who is attending prep school this year, previously verballed to Cal, just as Julian Sensley (6'-8" Jr. PF) did earlier this summer.  Oh, and we also hear that another Rockfish guy, Jermaine Harper (6'-3" Jr. SG) who is currently attending prep school as well (Blue Ridge School), has been offered by Cal.
