SoCalHoops Fall League News

ARC Fall League Starts
This Sunday--(Sept. 22, 1999)

This weekend marks the start of ARC Fall League play for the varsity boys' league.  There are two divisions again this fall, a Varsity I and Varsity II. Both divisions will be very competitive.  The "season" consists of a short, five game plus playoff tournament. It's short because the high school season will start at the end of November, and at that time, all players are limited to playing only on their high school teams.

We don't have the full five week schedule, because ARC hasn't worked it all out yet, but we do have the first two weeks.  Here's a rundown of the teams in the league, and the first two week's worth of games:

Boys' Varsity I Teams:

Sunday, September 26, 1999
Time Teams Location
10:00 a.m. Wisemen v. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High School
2:00 p.m. SO Griffins v. Sun McCambridge Park (Burbank)
7:00 p.m. The Bank v. Monsters of Midway McCambridge Park (Burbank)
8:00 p.m. LA Poly v. Skywalkers LA Poly High School
Sunday, October 3, 1999
10:00 a.m. Sherman Oaks v. SO Griffins Notre Dame High School
1:00 p.m. The Bank v. Wisemen McCambridge Park (Burbank)
4:00 p.m. LA Poly v. Monsters of Midway LA Poly High School
6:00 p.m. Sun v. Skywalkers McCambridge Park

Poly--This is the LA Poly team from Sun Valley.   They've got some very quick guards, not a lot of height and a brand new coach, at least this is what we think they'll look like if things haven't changed too much since the War on the Floor Tournament this past summer.

SO Griffins-- This is basically the Buckley HS varsity team: David Gale (5'-11" So. PG), Colin Ward-Henninger (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF), Roay Weaver (5'-8" Jr. SG), Adam Pastor (6'-2" Sr. SG/PG), Simon Leonov (6'-4" Sr. PF/C), Michael Lalazarian (5'-10" Sr. SG), Jake Scannel (6'-3" Jr. SF), Alex Clancy (5'-10" Jr. SG), Murali Sivalingham (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF), and Steven Broukhim (6'-5" Jr. SG).

Wisemen--This is the Milken HS team:  Daniel Greenberg (5'-9" Sr. PG), and a host of other returning players, most of whom we don't know by name.

The Bank--This is the Burbank HS team, which should have Frank Reed (5'9" Jr. PG), and Damien Jordan (6'-2" Sr. SG/SF).

Sun--We understand that this will be the Southwestern Academy team, from San Marino/Pasadena, the school now attended by Anthony Naylor (6'-4" Sr. SF), who was formerly at Harvard-Westlake and who was injured several times during this past year, but reportedly is now able to play after undergoing surgery and working with strength and conditioning coach Marv Marinovich.  We have no idea who else will be on this team, but we've heard they have some good incoming players.

Sherman Oaks--This is the Notre Dame High School team, with Cody Pearson (6'-4" Sr. SG/PG), Ruben Sanchez (5'-11" Jr. PG), and possibly Travis Johnson (6'-4" Sr. PF) who is currently playing football and is one of the top prospects in that sport, who might want a Sunday diversion.

Monsters of the Midway--This is Dave Bloomfield's team, which will also be at the Pump's Fall Premier Tournament this weekend, but with a lot of guys who will also be playing for other teams in the ARC league. Just which ones stay during the year is anyone's guess. This weekend he'll have Adam Drell (6'-6" Sr. PF) from Chatsworth, Andrew Bloomfield (6'-1" Sr. SG) from LA Baptist,  David Fisher (6'-3" Jr. SG/SF) from Hamilton, Craig Weinstein (5'-10" So. SG/PG) from Harvard-Westlake, and a contingent from Montclair Prep including Will Sheslow (6'-0" So. PG), Josiah Johnson (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF) and Tony McFadden (6'-3" Sr. SG).

Skywalkers--This is the Antelope Valley Christian team, and they will have virtually everyone back from the Southern Section Division V-A finalist and runner-up (they lost to Price in the Southern Section final, but still advanced to the State Tournament, losing in the first round to Coast Union).  The team should have Matthew Nurse (5'-11" Sr. PG), Jeff Ober (5'-6" Sr. G), Jamal Flanagan (6'-2" Jr. PG/SG/SF), Peter Pun (5'-6" Sr. G), Danny Kikm (5'-6" So. G), Solomon De Francis (5'-10" Jr.  G), Dean Refai (5'-8" Sr. G),   Orlando Flanagan (6'-0" Jr. G/F), Peter Beaudin (6'-7" Sr. F/C), Steve Lee (6'-0" Sr. G/F), and John Cho (6'-1" Jr. F). Very good small school team.

Here's the Boys' Varsity I schedule for the next two weeks:

Sunday, September 26, 1999
Time Teams Location
9:00 a.m. MP v. ARC 14's North Hollywood High
2:00 p.m. Saracens v. West Hills North Hollywood High
3:00 p.m. Valley v. Palos Verdes McCambridge Park (Burbank)
8:00 p.m. North Hollywood v. Cowboys North Hollywood High
Sunday, October 3, 1999
9:00 a.m. Cowboys v. Palos Verdes LA Poly High
11:00 a.m. ARC 14's v. Valley LA Poly High
1:00 p.m. MP v. Saracens North Hollywood High
8:00 p.m. North Hollywood v. West Hills North Hollywood High

North Hollywood-- This is Rob Bloom's North Hollywood High varsity, featuring (William Kim (5'-9" Jr. PG), Nathan Stern (6'-2" So. SG/SF), Kenny Hauser (6'-4" So. SF), Eric Roller (6'-3" So. C/PF), Dominic Johnson (5'-10" So. SG ), David Danipour (5'-11" So. F), David Hernandez (5'-9" So. PG) Yan Karim (6'-2" Jr. F/C), and Gus Ruiz (6'-2" Jr. F), a transfer from Reseda), and probably some others we don't know yet.

West Hills-- This is supposed to be the Chaminade High team, and this is kind of interesting, since we don't remember the last time Chaminade played as a team in a fall league.  They'll have Scott Borchart (6'-9" Jr. PF), and several returning players, but they are mostly a mystery for now and we can't wait to see who Jeff Young has brought up to replace all the seniors who graduated last season.

ARC 14's-- This is a team of all 14 year old players, probably a couple of ninth graders, but mostly a younger team which competes together in AAU but which is "playing up" to get tougher competition against high school varsity players.  We have no idea who is on this team.

MP-- We suspect that this is Montclair Prep, and if it is, they should have Josiah Johnson (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF), Will Sheslow (6'-0" So. PG), Tony McFadden (6'-3" Sr. SG), Charlie Kranzdorf (6'-2" So. SG/SF), and others. . . If it's not Montclair Prep, well, we have no idea what "MP" stands for. . .

Palos Verdes-- We understand this is mostly the Chadwick team, which will feature Peter McCaslin (5'11" Jr. SG) who plays with Sam Alipio's Total Impact. No idea who Chadwick will have this year besides him, but we'll find out.

Cowboys-- We don't really know, but we've heard it's a team from Hart High.

Saracens -- This is the Harvard-Westlake team, which will feature top prospect Russell Lakey (5'-11" Sr. PG), returneees Eric Geffner (6'-5" Sr. SG), Craig Weinstein (5'-10" So. SG/PG), Chad Garson (6'-4" Sr. SG), and possibly football player Spencer Torgan (6'-4" Sr. PF), and a bunch of young guys coming up including Robbie Wizenberger (6'-2" So. SG) and others.

Valley-- We have heard that this is a group of players mostly from Grant High School, so we'd expect to see Mike Charleston (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF), Ryan Logan (5'-10" Sr. PG), and several other up and coming players who will be with the Lancers this year.

As you can see, the games are all at four different locations.  Here directions to each site:

McCambridge Park:   Located in Burbank.   From anywhere west of the 5 Freeway in the Valley:   Take the 101-134 freeway east.  Exit at Victory (just before the 134 & 5 freeway interchange).   Turn left and proceed north on Victory.  Turn right at Burbank Blvd, and proceed east to 3rd Street in Burbank (this is near the media center. . . if you run into Burbank High, you're going the right way).   Turn left on 3rd street and proceed north to Amherst.  The intersection of 3rd & Amherst is a "T" intersection and you will be directly in front of the park.  Turn right and go to Glenoaks.  The gym entrance is on Glenoaks Blvd.

North Hollywood High-- The school is located on Vineland and Magnolia, just two blocks west of the Hollywood Freeway.  From the Ventura Freeway heading east (from either the San Diego 405 Fwy, or the west Valley), exit at Laurel Canyon, and turn left.  Proceed north about one mile to Magnolia, and turn right.  Proceed about a 1/2 mile to the first signal light, and turn into the school parking lot. . . the gym is at the back.

LA Poly High-- Located in Sun Valley at the intersection of Roscoe Blvd and Whitsett. From the Roscoe exit of the Hollywood Fwy (the170), proceed east to Whitsett and turn left, and then make a right at the first street. You'll see the gym and the parking lot.

Notre Dame High--  Located at the corner of Woodman and Riverside in Sherman Oaks.  From the Ventura Freeway, exit at Woodman and turn north to Riverside.  Proceed past Riverside and turn right into the parking lot.   The gym is the building with the rounded roof.  Enter from the front in the courtyard.

See you there.
