Double Pump Fall Premier
Tournament--(Aug. 11, 1999)

Traditionally, Double Pump has run "shootouts" in the spring and fall, during the open evaluation periods.   While the fall shootouts have allowed some unattached or unaffiliated players (i.e., players who don't play on a club or travel team) to play in modified "shootout format" games (i.e., no free throws, running clock, no fouls) in front of the college coaches, most of the players who have participated in recent years have, for the most part, been affiliated with a team or club traveling program anyway.   While the shootout format is useful and allows players to get valuable exposure before the college coaches, there's really no substitute for watching a real, honest to goodness basketball game, using regulation high school rules, referrees, and with a stop-clock.  Sure watching guys shoot free throws can boring, and it definitely slows the game down, but hey, it's what the real game is about, and if a guy is a good free-throw shooter (or a lousy one) college coaches should be able to get a look at that too, right?

As they say, the only constant is change, and so, for the first time in the fall, Double Pump will hold a tournament instead of a shootout. This one is billed as being for clubtraveling teams, and we'd also expect to see high school teams (in their club incarnations) participating as well.  And best of all, it's also scheduled so as not to conflict with the Long Beach Fall Hoops Classic, which is the week before.  We're not sure exactly which teams will be attending the Pump Premier Tournament, but we'd expect to see some of the usual suspects at this one.   It will, as always with Pump events,  be held at Cal State Dominguez Hills from September 24 through September 26.  We spoke with David Pump and he told us that indications are right now that it will be limited to 52 teams, which will make for a much more civilized bracket structure than was employed at the 96 team Best of Summer Tournament a couple of weeks ago.
