Fresno Gets Visit From
Marcus Moore--(Aug. 9, 1999)
One of our good friends from Fresno alerted us to an article by Andy Katz in the Fresno Bee published this past Thursday regarding Tito Maddox (6'-4" PG) from Compton and Marcus Moore (6'-5" PG) a recent graduate out of Compton Dominguez. The gist of the article was that Fresno would be getting an official visit from Marcus as a backup against the "possibility" that Tito Maddox would not qualify.
And from everything we've heard, not only will Tito not not qualify, his letter of intent will be void anyway because, based on reports from reliable sources, he never graduated from high school, but was enrolled for the past few weeks of last semester in a continuation school which he didn't complete. Additionally, at least according to Katz' story, Tito hasn't taken either the SAT or the ACT. There are rumors circulating about Tito going to a prep schoool in the east, but we think the most likely bet is that Tito will wind up at Compton JC or another local JC. If you're Tito and thinking about going to the NBA in a couple of years anyway, you're probably not going to fade into oblivion for a year as a Prop 48 at Fresno State, but will play somewhere, anywhere, even if it means burning a year of D-I eligibility at a JC.
According to the Bee story, Marcus said he'll "decide where he'll go next week" after taking the visit. Moore averaged 12 points and nine assists for state Division 2-champion Dominguez, found out three weeks ago that he got a qualifying score on the SAT. Since becoming eligible, Moore told Katz that he's taken visits to Washington State and Rhode Island. "I really liked Rhode Island, but I would like it a lot better if Lamar Odom was there," Moore told Katz. "I really liked Washington State because it was like a real campus. You could see it from everywhere. I like coach Jerry Tarkanian."
Moore did tell Katz that if Tito became eligible he probably wouldn't sign with Fresno. "Why should I go somewhere where I can't get a lot of minutes?"
Since the weekend, there's a rumor circulating that Marcus has now committed to Washington State, but we think that's premature, and we'll wait to hear from him shortly. Again, the bottom line with all these "verbals" is that they aren't worth the paper they're written on and unlike a National Letter of Intent, a player can always change his mind.
