Old News: Chris Jeffries
Returns To Fresno--(Aug. 31, 1999)
Alright, so we're a week late with this one, and everyone already knows. Better late than never, right? The rumor last week was that Chris Jeffries (6'-8" So. SF/PF) would be leaving Arkansas and transferring to Fresno State. It's now official: Arkansas released Jeffries and he has returned to Fresno and enrolled in classes. He will have to sit out the year under NCAA transfer rules, but will still have three years of eligibility remaining. A lot of people have also speculated that with Jeffries returning to Fresno that Tark could be looking to reunite the entire California D-III State Championship team from Fresno Washington Union by attracting DeShawn Stevenson (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF), one of the consensus top 5 players in the country. DeShawn is also being widely recruited, but is, according to our sources still interested in Fresno State, as well as UCLA, Wyoming, Duke, and a dozen other schools.
About Jeffries though, Andy Katz of the Fresno Bee wrote: "Jefferies said Friday he wasn't returning to Fayetteville, even though he was the Razorbacks' top returning scorer. Jefferies was on the Fresno State campus for Monday's first day of school and is in the process of enrolling for classes. He'll have three seasons of eligibility remaining, beginning in the 2000-2001 season. Bulldogs coach Jerry Tarkanian can't comment on Jefferies until he's enrolled. However, that rule doesn't apply to the players. "I'm loving it," senior Terrance Roberson said. "It shows coach Tark is building talent with Chris, Demetrius Porter, Nick Irvin, Travis Robinson and Noel Felix here next year. Having Chris will help us in practice. He plays my position, and he'll be hard to guard. He can help me work on my defense."
