Gregg Guenther Commits To USC;
Dual Sports?--(Aug. 26, 1999)
Both the LA Times and the LA Daily News are reporting today that Gregg Guenther (6'-8" Sr. PF) who transferred from Crespi to Taft for his final season, has verbally committed to USC. Gregg also played this spring and summer with Pump N Run Gold, played during the spring with the Rockfish Spring League, and has made known his desire to play both football and basketball in college. While neither the Times article nor the Daily News article make any mention about Gregg also playing hoops at SC (the articles only confirm that he has committed to play football), based on our discussions with several very highly placed sources who have direct knowledge of what Coach Bibby is looking for, and based on several discussions we had throughout the course of the summer with Gregg following his meetings with both the football and basketball coaches at USC, we'd be very surprised if you don't see Gregg on the court playing basketball for the Trojans sometime a year from now as well as on the gridiron.
According to both newspapers, Guenther verbally committed yesterday. He reportedly chose USC over offers he received from (according to the Daily News) Arizona State, Washington and Ohio State, and (according to the Times) Michigan. Guenther is USC's sixth commitment this year. Greg cited as one of the principal reasons for his selection USC's proximity to his family and home.
