West Coast All-Stars: Best Of
The Best, #2--(July 17, 1999)
This was indeed a game filled with the Best of the Best in the camp during the second session, and despite the fact that several of the top players in the underclasses were placed into their own age groups (like Amaury Fernandez, Jack Martinez, Franklin Matos, etc. . . do we sense an anti-Artesia bias from the all-star committee? Probably not, because in Fernandez' case, he only played in two games during the session, Martinez was having problems adjusting from his trip to ABCD, and Matos, well, he was just being a soph), there was still just a ton of talent.
The teams were divided into "Blue" and "White" teams, and it was pretty much eeny-meeny when it came to deciding which player was going to be on which squad, and frankly it didn't really matter. This was not so much a showcase game as much as it was a way of rewarding the best players in the camp for playing well, and it gave them an opportunity to play for 40 minutes before the assmebled coaches, who only had to concentrate on one game and not 4 as they do during the camp situation.
Here are the rosters, and we want to congratulate all the players who were selected as the "Best of the Best":
