Finals For Best Of Summer; Semis In
Other Two
Tournaments Today--(July 24, 1999)
We've been way too busy watching games to write about them, but all that will change after today since this is the day which marks the finals in at least one of the three large tournaments: The adidas Double Pump Best of Summer, which has consumed most of our time. The Slam N Jam NIT and the Rim Rattler Southern California Summer Showdown will not be done until tomorrow, so it looks like everyone who anticipated a day off will still have to make it over to Long Beach to see some games. The first two are the most well known events, and the Double Pump tournament has been where we've spent most of our time, since that's where most of the talent has been located, and with 96 teams participating this year, it was more than twice the size of the NIT, and more than 4 times the size of the Southern California Summer Showdown which has managed just 22 teams, and some of those teams, like QBL have consisted of younger players (i.e.,not the Artesia varsity, which has instead been at the Best of Summer), there are some good top teams at Cypress, including the Hood, so some college coaches will undoubtedly make it out there today too.
The Best of Summer kicks off this morning with one or two "Sweet 16" games, and then a couple of "Great 8" games, followed by the semis at 12:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. The Final Championship game at the Best of Summer will be at 4:00 p.m.. Last night Texas Blue Chip I defeated EBO by about 16 points to advance to meet the Madison Broncos, and they beat Madison to advance to the quarterfinal game against QBL which will get underway at 12:30 p.m. today. QBL also advanced on a last second buzzer-beater, a running floater in the lane by Andre Hazel as QBL beat the Michigan Mustangs late last night. The QBL game and the Madison-Texas games didn't finish until well after 11:00 p.m., because in an earlier game, Spencer Cori (6'-8" Sr. F/C) who is listed at 225, but is probably at about 240, shattered the backboard on the center court, and since they were without a replacement, the center court was immobilized and some games got off later than anticipated.
