adidas Double Pump Best
Of Summer First Day Schedule--(July 17, 1999)

The adidas Double Pump Best of Summer gets underway this Tuesday, at two different locations:  The usual spot at Cal State Dominguez Hills, and new for this year, to accomodate the 96 teams participating, the Rolling Hills Prep facility just as Vegas is ending, and if it all seems like it's blurring together, just imagine what it would be like being a college coach having to actually work and watch all these kids playing day in and day out for almost one solid month, every day and every night.  Better yet, imagine what it's like to be one of the players. . . . well, it's not really all that bad, and since we've spent most of the month with many of these players,  we've seen first-hand that despite the fact that they're playing two, sometimes three games a day, they're really having fun, and if a player can stay healthy, he'll get better and improve and may even get a college scholarship in the process, and so in our view, if even one young man gets to college who might not otherwise make it, that's one less problem for the rest of society.

In any event, the adidas Las Vegas Big Time ends for most of the teams tomorrow, Sunday, July 18.  Of course the best teams will still be playing, and the finals won't be until Monday afternoon, July 19.  But that's only 8 teams out of 256 (2 each in four different divisions) so the majority of teams at least get the day off on Monday to use for travel.  Some kids will be leaving for 5 Star Camp, and still others will be heading to LA for the Best of Summer, the Slam N Jam NIT, and the Summer Showdown, all of which get started on Tuesday, July 20.
