Best In The West Shootout: Day Three
Pool Results & 7/1 Schedule--(July 1, 1999)

Here are the results from yesterday's Best in the West Summer Shootout:

Clovis West 73 vs. Serra 56
Lakewood 49 vs. Harvard-Westlake 68
Fontana 86 vs. Centennial 76
San Bernadino 48 vs. Upland 72
Mayfair 74 vs. Rosemead 48
Artesia 63 vs. Ayala 52
LB Poly 92 vs. Redondo 56
LB Jordan beat Corssroads (score not available)
Dominguez beat J.W. North (score not available)

In the Serra game, Doyle Cole (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) scored 25 points but Serra got clobbered by Clovis West, as Chris Hernandez scored a solid 14 points, Eric Norcross hit for 17, and Charlie Rodriguez scored 19.  We also managed to catch some of the details from the H-W v. Lakewood game, Craig Weinstein (5'-10" So. SG/PG) scored 16 points, while Russell Lakey was held to an unusually low 12 points; Robert Hicks scored 21 for Lakewood in the loss. Other players who had big games were Aaron Gipson of Fontana in the Centennial game, Prentice Harris and DeMarcus Williams of Upland, Eddie Draughn of Mayfair, and finally Ramaan Shotwell of LB Poly had a good game, something he's been struggling to do in this tournament.  We didn't get to see any of the evening games because we were over at the War on the Floor Tournament (see the related article on that one), and we'll be there tonight as well).

We also managed to get some of the key stats from the prior day's action (day two), and here's what we know about the high scorers:  Travon Bryant (LB Jordan) --17 points; Doyle Cole (Serra)-28 points;  Wesley Stokes (Poly)--28 points; Walter White (Redondo)--19 points; Travon Williams (Fontant)--14 points; Jack Martinez (Artesia)--23 points (five other players with 9 from Artesia v. Harvard-Westlake); Russell Lakey (Harvard-Westlake)--19 points; Tyson Chandler (Dominguez) 14 points; Eddie Draughn (Mayfair)--16 points; Isaiah Fox (Crossroads)--26 points.

Today marks the beginning of the single elimination part of the tournament.  The top two teams in each pool advance to the championship bracket, and the bottom two teams advance to the runner-up or consolation bracket.  Here's the schedule for today:

Championship Bracket Games Runner-Up Bracket Games

12:30 p.m.   Harvard-Westlake v. Bonita Vista

So now is when the serious fun begins.  The tournament concludes tomorrow, July 2, with the quarterfinals, semis, and the championship games in each bracket at 7:15 and 8:30 p.m. respectively.

See you there.
