Aerick Sanders Update: Offered By
Many;
Chief To Decide Soon--(July 27, 1999)
Aerick "Chief" Sanders (6'-9" Sr. C) from Gardena Serra, probably the most consistent player this summer on the Pump N Run Gold team, and an outstanding performer at ABCD, has been receiving offers from high to mid-major D-I schools like they were going out of style. He was recently offered by Northwestern, by Providence, St. Louis, Oregon State, Oregon, and he will reportedly be offered by Steve Fischer at San Diego State shortly.
Aerick, a long and lean post player with the ability to play facing the basket or with his back to the hoop equally well, has just about the quickest reaction time of any big man in the senior class, with quick hands, great court vision, and he can convert a post pass on the run, or with a turn around jumper. We've seen him catch passes that most guards would have trouble holding onto, and he's got great footwork, a superior drop step and runs the floor very well. We saw Aerick in a game at the Best of Summer tournament actually come from down on the low block on defense, circle around behind the point guard and pop the ball loose, steal it, and run the length of the floor and finish. . . which would be a great play for a 6'-1" point guard on defense; for a 6'-8" center, it was an amazing play. Aerick's only real weak spot is that he's a bit on the thin side for major D-I ball right now, but with another season of high school basketball, and a serious weight-training program in college that's bound to change. He's an aggressive defender, with extremely long arms which makes him an effective shot blocker. Oh, and he's also one of the nicest young men you'll ever want to meet. We'd hope that he stays near home (are the Trojans listening???) but wherever Aerick decides to play, he'll be an impact player by not later than his sophomore season, and perhaps sooner.
