West Coast All Stars First Session:
Junior All Star Game--(July 10, 1999)

Following the Frosh-Soph game, the juniors got to show their stuff, and there were some really impressive players, many of them the top players in SoCal and on the West Coast this year.  Here's who the committee selected for this game:

Among the standouts in this game were Craig Smith, who continued to drive to the rack and throw down dunks, and Louis Amundson, who is a slender, active and surprisingly tough player; he played on Aubrey McCreary's Kansas team and showed great versatility on offense, and played tough on D all the time; he loves to slash to the hole, and he did that a couple of times in this game, although he wasn't getting fed the ball nearly as much as he was during the camp.  Kyle Egkan, who also plays for Rockfish in addition to playing for his Villa Park team (which may end up being a conflict in Vegas, where the rule is supposedly going to be enforced against players playing for more than one team), looked pretty good at the camp, rebounding well, and blocking a couple of shots and in this game he sort of stood out as the lone big man,   well, that is if you don't count Brandon Jones the other 6'-8" guy who also played well and impressed a few coaches.

The two Jasons, Braxton and Burrell were both moving, slashing and shaking, and Braxton had an especially good camp. He's a very quick, energetic player who can pop from outside, and has very good isolation moves to shake even the best defender.  Two of the four Artesia guys were pretty quiet (Heron and Ivory), but we were pretty suprised to see Tony Roberts shaking things up with some very nice outside shooting.  We didn't really get to see a lot of Tony during the camp, so this was a good opportunity to check out his game, and we have to say that if he was going to school anywhere else, he'd be in the five man starting lineup. He shoots with a smooth, accurate stroke well out to three.

Jonathan Harper had a good camp, but was not shooting like his old self from this past spring, and it may be that his shoulder injury was still bothering him some, but he did manage a couple of very nice jumpers and some great rebounds.  Jonathan is a very athletic wing player who can slash, jump like a maniac, and he can rebound very effectively down low, and he's also got huge feet for those who find such things interesting:  Actually they're a size 17, and Jono will certainly go through another growth spurt or two before next year.
