War On The Floor: 1999 Version
Coming Next Week--(June 22, 1999)

Bort Escoto, head coach at Sylmar, promised to send us the "War on the Floor" logo to use along with our articles for this great annual summer tournament, and we're still waiting.  And we have a feeling we'll be waiting a little while longer, but not to worry because Bort was kind enough to pass along the schedules for the first three days of pool play which will get started on June 29 and run through Thursday July 1.  The tournament will then kick into single-elimination mode on July 2 and the finals will take place on July 3 (although we don't have a schedule for that either . . . yet).

Here's what we do know:

All of the pool play games (with the exception of a few games which will be played at Canoga Park HS) will be played at Pierce College, a community college located just off Winnetka in both the North and South Gyms.  We always thought they were East and West, or Men's and Women's, but if you can locate the gyms (they're just west of the tennis courts, and the pool is located right between the two gyms) then you won't have to worry about which is which, because they are literally right next to each other.

So who is coming?  Here are the pools:

Pool A Pool B Pool C Pool D Pool E Pool F
Inglewood
Canoga Park
Alemany
Daniel Murphy
Crespi
Chatsworth
Montclair Prep
Saugus
Santa Monica
Taft
Hart
Reseda
Cleveland
Dorsey
Notre Dame
Hollywood
Marshall Fund.
Sylmar
Westlake
Canyon (CC)
Muir
Harvard-Westlake
Campbell Hall
Granada Hills

The schedule is pretty simple too. Games start at 10:00 a.m. the first day, but are staggered throughout the day, presumably to accomodate summer school attendance or just to allow for vacation and travel, and will continue with the last games getting started at 9:00 p.m.  Games with an * will be played at Canoga Park HS, all other games are at Pierce College.  Here's the schedule for Tuesday June 29, Wednesday June 30, and Thursday July 1:

This should be a fun tournament and you'll get the opportunity to see most of the good players from the San Fernando Valley as well as from some of the surrounding region.  On paper at least Inglewood, Santa Monica, and Chatsworth are probably the strongest teams in the tournament, but virtually any team might make a good run for the title this year. As we get closer to the event, we'll try to do some breakdowns of what you'll see on a team by team basis.  For now, it's worth remembering that this tournament takes place during the same time frame as the Best in the West Tournament No. 2 which will run from June 28 through July 2 at Artesia High, so you'll probably have to make a choice between the Valley and the City given the driving distances involved.

See you there.
