1st Annual Ventura County Coaches
Assoc.
Tournament This Weekend--(June 21, 1999)
The 1st Annual Ventura County Coaches Association Tournament will start this Friday June 25. The tournament is two days with all games played at Agoura High School. The gym will be divided into two courts, with two games going on simultaneously during the early rounds, so if they don't have one of those silly curtains, you'll be able to watch two games at once, in preparation for training yourself to watch three and possibly four games at once at some of the camps and tournaments later this summer. This doesn't look like an overwhelmingly tough tournament, in fact the competition is not nearly as tough as what you'll see at some of the other tournaments taking place this coming weekend, but it will still give everyone an idea of how some of the local Ventura County teams stack up against some Valley area, City Section schools like Grant, Chatsworth, San Fernando and Kennedy.
We'll actually be at a tournament in Palm Springs this Friday and Saturday, so it's doubtful that you'll see us there, but if you go, you'll see a bunch of guys named "Adam" including two of the better players at Agoura, Adam Allegro (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) and Adam Sacks (5'-11" Sr. PG), and from Chatsworth, Adam Drell (6'-6" Sr. PF), that is, if his back has recovered from minor surgery from a couple of months ago. We really wanted to see ECR, another City Section team that had some good results in the first two rounds of the Watts Summer Games, beating Pacifica and Lynwood. This will also be the first occasion of the summer to get a good look at Kennedy without Nana Gbwanyo, and to get a look at the Gilbert-less Grant High team which will feature, among others, Mike Charleston (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF) and Ryan Logan (5'-11" Sr. PG). Should be a good opportunity for some fun basketball in a not-too intense environment. Hopefully some of our readers will send in the results, or they'll be posted in the LA Times, Daily News or the Ventura County Star, because, as we said, we won't be able to personally attend.
