San Gabriel High School Tournament
Next Weekend, June 25-27--(June 16, 1999)
Ah, June and it's high school tournament month. . . and when June rolls around, we get tons of e-mail letting us know about tournaments. Today we got an e-mail from coach Jon Keller, the head coach at San Gabriel HS, and he wanted to remind us about the San Gabriel Summer Tournament which will take place next weekend, starting Friday, June 25, and continuing through Sunday, June 27. Presumably all of the games will be at San Gabriel HS (although Jon's e-mail didn't specifically so state), and that would explain why it's called the "San Gabriel HS Tournament." See, we catch on really quickly.
This will be a 24 team tournament, with 8 teams receiving first round byes, which were given out at random, as opposed to having been decided based on the relative strength of teams, because, after all, this is summer and the No. 1 priority of most coaches is getting games in, not winning tournaments based on seedings or getting byes.
Most of the teams are local to the San Gabriel Valley and Pomona Valley areas, such as Maranatha, La Salle, Arcadia, Southwestern Academy, Arroyo, South Pasadena, Montclair, Chino, La Canada, Temple City, etc. Jon was kind enough to send along an Excel spreadsheet containing all of the games, and a schedule in a very handy chart (which translated very nicely into html format), so you can see when the games are scheduled you might want to check out. Keep in mind, it's not as neat and sweet as a bracket might be, but then sometimes brackets aren't all that clear either.
The basic point to remember is that the first place Championship game will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, 1999 in the "New Gym"; the consolation final (which looks like the 11th place game), will also take place the same time and day, but in the "Big Gym". We don't know which is the "Big Gym" and which is the "New Gym" but San Gabriel HS has a really nice website showing some of their completely new campus structures, including some really nice gym space. For those who need directions, San Gabriel High School is located at 801 Ramona St., San Gabriel, CA 91776 (the zip code is important, we suppose, if you intend to mail yourself there, otherwise please disregard it), and the school can be reached by phone at (818) 308 - 2356 (although we thought the area code had changed to 626 by now).
In any event, this looks like it will be a very competitive tournament, with teams ranging from D-1AA all the way to Division V. We hope to be able to stop by sometime during the weekend, if only to check out the great looking gyms. Here's the complete schedule, with all of the first round games highlighted:
