Crespi Losing Another Big One:
Guenther Transfers To Taft--(June 5, 1999)
Gregg Guenther (6'-8" Jr. PF/C) from Crespi will reportedly transfer to Taft next year, according to a published report written by Eric Sondheimer in today's Valley Edition of the Los Angeles Times. According to Sondheimer, Gregg, whose mother is an assistant principal at Taft, decided that he wanted to get the experience of attending a large public school over the small-enrollment private all-boys' Catholic school in Encino. And it probably didn't hurt either that Taft is the defending LA City football champions.
In addition Guenther's considerable basketball skills--he plays for the Pump N Run Gold team which made it to the Championship game of the adidas EBO/EA Hoop Summit III tournament last weekend-- he is also a standout football player who is currently being recruited by most of the top football powers on the West Coast, including UCLA and USC.
Guenther will transfer to Taft under open enrollment. According to Sondheimer, the Guenther family recently moved into the El Camino Real enrollment area, but Gregg opted instead to attend Taft, where his mother also works.
And it looks like those who were looking forward to Crespi making a serious title run this next season in basketball, will have to wait a bit longer. Guenther's impending transfer marks the third football transfer and the second basketball transfer (admittedly these transfers involve the same three players) in the last few weeks. In addition to Guenther's transfer, Crespi basketball player Mike Luderer will be transferring to Notre Dame, along with Jimmy Sharp. Sharp and Luderer will also play football at Notre Dame.
