Best in the West Summer
Shootout No. 2 Starts Today--(June 28, 1999)
Best in the West Shooutout Tournament #2
What: Best in the West Summer Shootout No. 2
When: June 28-July 2
Where: Artesia High School
Who: 16 teams, 5 pools
Last week's Best in the West is now just a fond memory. We were out of town covering the tournament in Palm Springs, and thus didn't get to see the finals of the Best in the West No. 1, but thanks to Louis Johnson at the Long Beach Press Telegram, we know that Franklin Mattos (6'-3" So. PG) really smoked the tournament as Artesia beat Pasadena in the final game yesterday, 101-51. According to Louis' account, "Matos came off the bench to score a team-high 22 points as Artesia High rolled to a 101-51 basketball victory over Pasadena in the championship game of the Best in the West Summer Shootout I Sunday night at Artesia."
Jack Martinez (6'-7" Jr. PF) was named the Tournament MVP, and he scored 17 points while teammate Apolinar Fernandez (6'-9" Jr. PF) scored 15. Martinez also scored 21 points in Artesia's 79-48 semifinal victory over Santa Margarita earlier in the day. For Pasadena Douglas Thomas (6'-8" Jr. F) hit for 23 points, including "several thunderous dunks."
So now that the first installment is over, the second one starts today. As noted above, this one takes place June 28 through July 2 at Artesia High School. This is a slightly larger tournament, and will probably be even more competitive than as the first installment of the Summer BIW.
Here are the pool play schedules and pools for the second of the two tournaments, from June 28-July 2:

We know that several of the teams participating in this one, at least Harvard-Westlake, is also scheduled to be in the War on the Floor, which starts tomorrow, 6/29, and looking at the schedule, we're guessing that they'll have to split up the team into two different squads because there's no practical way they can get from West Hills in the Valley following their 12:30 p.m. game (which won't be over until about 2:30 p.m.) and still make it to Artesia HS for a 3:00 p.m. game against San Bernardino. Perhaps the BIW schedule has been slightly tweaked since Wayne Merino first sent it to us last month (which is the one shown above) but if so, we'll have too find out later. For now, the one above is what we have and we're sticking with it.
The top two teams advance to the Championship Bracket for single elimination play and the bottom two teams drop to the Runner-up bracket, also for single elimination play which will start on Wednesday.
The semifinals in the Championship bracket are at 1:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. on July 2, and the semis in the Runner-up brackets will be at 4:00 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. also on the 2nd. The Championship Final is at 7:30 p.m. while the runner-up final is at 8:45 p.m.
Artesia HS is located at 12108 E. Del Amo Blvd., Lakewood, CA 90715. The school is located just off the 605 Fwy. Exit at Del Amo Blvd., and head east on Del Amo. The school is located on the north side of the street, at the corner of Norwalk Blvd. and Del Amo.
See you there.
