Best in the West: The Real Pool Play
Schedule Emerges--(June 29, 1999)

Best in the West Shooutout Tournament #2

What: Best in the West Summer Shootout No. 2
When: June 28-July 2
Where: Artesia High School
Who: 20 teams, 5 pools

Ok, so we got the Best in the West schedules sort of wrong, but we just used what Wayne Merino sent us in May (oh, and thanks for the T-Shirt too Wayne), and there have evidently been a few changes in the pools and thus in the scheduling as well.

Here are the corrected and revised pool play schedules and pools for BIW Summer Shootout for Pool Play for today, June 29 and tomorrow June 30 (we'll post the single elimination stuff when we know about it, although for planning purposes, you should know that the Semifinals in the Championship bracket will be Friday July 2 at 1:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. and the Championship game will be at 7:30 in the Winner's Bracket; the Consolation Championship will be at 8:45 on Friday night with the semis at 4:00 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.

Here are the newly revised pools:

Pool A Pool B Pool C Pool D Pool E
A1 Long Beach Poly
A2 Redondo

A3 Fontana
A4 Compton Centennial
B1 Artesia
B2 Ayala

B3 Lakewood
B4 Harvard-Westlake
C1 Dominguez
C2 Mayfair
C3 JW North

C4 Rosemead
D1 Ontario
D2 L.B. Jordan
D3 Crossroads
D4 Bonita Vista
E1 Clovis West
E2 Serra
E3 San Bernardino
E4 Upland

What's changed in the Pool structure is that Compton Centennial (with Omar Weaver 6'-7" Sr. SF) has been inserted into Pool A in place of California, which isn't in the tournament, and in Pool B and E, Serra and Harvard-Westlake have switched places,  apparently so that H-W can compete in both the War on the Floor and the Best in the West, which may have been a bit of over-scheduling, but who are we to criticize.  We're not sure how fair it was to put Harvard-Westlake in the same pool with Artesia, Ayala and Lakewood, but then we don't know how fair it would have been to put them in with Clovis West, San Bernardino and Upland either, especially since the Wolverines were very shorthanded yesterday (they were missing 9 of the 16 players listed on their roster) in their loss to Ayala, and even with Russell Lakey (6'-0" Sr. PG), Craig Weinstein (5'-10" So. SG/PG), Austin Scott (5'-8" So. SG), Bryan Coffey (6'-0" Jr. SG), Chris Hooks (6'-2"  Sr. SG), and Eric Geffner (6'-5" Sr. SF/SG), H-W was clearly outgunned and outshot by Ayala, so there's no telling what will happen when Artesia gets a hold of them. But hey, it's summer, time for some fun, right?  Especially if you're Jack Martinez or Amaury Fernandez.

Here are the newly revised schedules for today and Wednesday in pool play:

6/29 Tuesday Pool Play Schedule   6/30 Wednesday Pool Play Schedule
10:00 a.m. Clovis West v. Upland   Mayfair v. Rosemead
11:15 p.m Ayala v. Lakewood   Lakewood v. Serra

Again, the semifinals in the Championship bracket are at 1:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. on July 2, and the semis in the Runner-up brackets will be at 4:00 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. also on the 2nd.   The Championship Final is at 7:30 p.m. while the runner-up final is at 8:45 p.m.
