UCI Recruiting Recap: Jensen,
Okoro, Christ & Parada--(May 18, 1999)
No big surprises for the Anteaters here, as UCI finally announced that it has received signed letters of intent from everyone who verballed earlier, including Matt Okoro (6'-7" Sr. F) from Buena Park HS, and J.R. Christ (6'-8" So. PF) from Hutchinson JC in Kansas. We did earlier articles on all these verbals/signings, but here's the most recent press release from UCI:
UCI head men's basketball coach Pat Douglass has announced the signing of three student-athletes in the spring signing period. J.R. Christ, a 6-8 forward from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College averaged 5.4 points and 3.7 rebounds this past season. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Jens Jensen is a 6-5 swingman from Denmark and spent the last two years at San Jose City College, where he averaged 12.1 points and was second in the state at 89 percent from the foul line this past season.
Matt Okoro, a 6-7 forward from Buena Park High School, led Orange County in rebounding this past season at 14.3 boards per game and also averaged 15.6 points while shooting 65 percent from the field.
These three join 6-11 Adam Parada, a fall signee out of Alta Loma High, where he averaged 17 points and 12.5 rebounds this season.
The bigger news though out of Irvine is that the students voted in a referendum this past week to raise their student registration fees to $33 per quarter, and the additional fees will provide increases scholarship money across the board to UCI athletics, it will support other athletic related programs (band, cheerleaders, etc) and it will also insure the return of baseball and the addition of two women's sports (to be determined), which can only have a positive effect on the future of UCI at the D-I level.
