Cal Poly Pomona Sued For Wrongful
Termination By Former Coach--(May 22, 1999)
Yesterday's Inland Valley Daily Bulletin featured a story by Fred J. Robledo on the reaction to the lawsuit filed by former head coach Tom Marshall who was fired last year. Here's the story:
Cal Poly Pomona officials are aware of the wrongful termination lawsuit filed Monday by former Broncos basketball coach Tom Marshall, but they are refusing to comment. "At this time we have nothing to say," said Aida Morad, Cal Poly assistant director of public affairs. "But we do know that they (the charges) have been filed." The suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, names Cal Poly Pomona President Bob H. Suzuki, Broncos' director of athletics Karen L. Miller and the school's vice president of student affairs and university advancement, Gene Awakuni, as defendants.
Marshall, released April 3, 1998, is seeking an unspecified among of monetary damages for wrongful termination, infliction of emotional distress, violation of due process, violation of liberty interest and breach of contract. Marshall claims he was fired last year because he failed to immediately inform Miller that one of his assistant coaches, Matthew Purdy, was going to be named by a federal grand jury as an "unindicted co-conspirator" in the Northwestern University point-shaving scandal days before his release.
