5th Annual Nike Extravaganza: Matchups
Announced, Games At Pyramid--(May 14, 1999)

The Fifth Annual Nike Extravaganza boys' basketball tournament, sponsored by Mater Dei will move from the Cal State Fullerton to Long Beach State this coming year.  While the LA Times reported today that the event was going to move from the Bren Center, it was held there two years ago, and then moved this past February to CSUF because of a conflict in scheduling with the Anteaters.   So once again this coming year, in 2000, specifically on February 5, 2000, the Nike Extravaganza will be held at the Pyramid.

According to the Times article published today, Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight announced the matchups.  They will be:

Villa Park vs. Bellflower St. John Bosco
Ocean View vs. Servite
Santa Margarita vs. Glendora
Las Vegas Durango vs. Los Angeles Fairfax
L.A. Westchester vs. Lakewood Mayfair
Los Alamitos vs. Long Beach Poly
Mater Dei vs. Concord De La Salle
Oak Hill vs. Compton Dominguez.

The latter two games, and especially the last game between Oak Hill and Dominguez, will be the most heavily attended if this past year is any guide to what we can expect.   And once again the last two games should also be the best.  As the date draws near, we'll do the usual stuff with player profiles, team profiles, and the like.  For now, just mark your calendars (the hard-copy ones, because we all know that at midnight, December 31, 1999, your computer will be useless) for February 5, 1999 and plan to stay all day and well into the evening for some great basketball.

See you there.

Belmont Shore Basketball Club is sponsoreing its 5th annual Boys Basketball Camp on Saturday and Sunday June 5 & 6, 1999 at Long Beach City College.  The camp is designed to teach young boys (we don't know if girls are invited or not), in grades 3-8, basic fundamentals.  The camp will focus on perimeter, post play, transition and other aspects of the game, in order to develop the inidividual skills necessary for players to succeed.

The cost of the camp is$75.00, and it will be limited to 80 youngsters.  We don't know if there will be speakers or guests, but in the past, the camp has featured visits from several top speakers and instructors from among the ranks of division I coaches, including Steve Lavin (UCLA), Henry Bibby (USC), Jason Levy (University of Portland), Silvey Dominguez (USC), Michael Holton (UCLA), Lorenzo Romar (Pepperdine), Dave Miller (USC), Clyde Vaughan (Long Beach State), and many others.

All campers will receive a free t-shirt. If you have any questions call (310) 669-2307 or (562) 984-8355.
