LOS ANGELES - Spencer Gloger, a 6-6, 190-pounder from Santa Margarita Catholic High School who was the 1999 Orange County Register Player of the Year, has signed a grant-in-aid contract to attend UCLA. He will be a freshman next fall.
Under coach Jerry Debusk at Santa Margarita as a guard/forward, Gloger in 1998-99 averaged 23.7 points and 6.0 rebounds, while shooting 53.0 from the field, 46.0 from three-point range and 77.0 from the foul line. His senior honors included -- first-team All-CIF, Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register first-team All-County and the Most Valuable Player of the Sea View Conference.
In his last two seasons, Gloger helped lead Santa Margarita to a 59-5 record. Last year Santa Margarita was 26-3 and reached the CIF semi-finals. As a junior, Gloger helped lead his school to a 33-2 mark and the Div. II CA State championship.
He is the second local high school star to sign with the Bruins, joining McDonald's All-America 6-8 Jason Kapono who announced his Bruin intentions last week.
"In Spencer we are getting another quality local student-athlete to join our Bruin family," said UCLA head coach Steve Lavin. "Spencer has an accurate jump shot and has developed fundamentally sound basketball skills under coach Jerry Debusk. Like Jason Kapono, Spencer is an excellent student."
