Kenny Brunner Signs With JUCO
College Of Southern Idaho--(May 18, 1999)

We heard about this from several sources, and meant to post it yesterday, but Frank Burlison in his column today beat us to the punch.   Nevertheless, when we read it this morning in his weekly Orange County Register column it reminded us that we'd forgotten to post it. So here's the news:

Former Dominguez High of Compton point guard Kenny Brunner has signed a letter of intent to play at College of Southern Idaho, a junior college in Twin Falls.  This "letter of intent" should not be confused with the   "National Letter of Intent" program, because the latter doesn't have any JUCO members. Nevertheless, the point is, Brunner will be playing somewhere next year, while still preserving his eligibility while he shows the rest of the D-I world that he actually can play somewhere without either getting into trouble or surrounding himself with others of questionable character.  If our calculations are correct, Brunner will still have two years of eligibility remaining, because he played one year at Georgetown, and then has to burn a year of eligibility for the transfer regardless of where he attends school if he returns to a D-I program.

Brunner was a non-playing student at Santa Monica College this school year after attending Georgetown (where he was a starter in 16 games before transferring back to Fresno State.  Brunner never played at Fresno State he returned   and was then asked to leave the school after the incident with Avondre Jones and another student involving a samurai sword.  Brunner then spent the bulk of the summer last year in the Los Angeles County jail on charges of attempted murder and assault.   The charges were ultimately dropped and the case dismissed by the LA District Attorney when eyewitnesses could not identify Brunner as the suspected assailant.
