Corrections & Additions--(April 30, 1999)

Underclassmen Game: 6:00 p.m.
Girls' Senior Game: 7:30 p.m. approximately
Boys' Senior Game: 9:00 p.m. approximately
Where: LA Southwest College (corner of Vermont & Imperial Highway)
Tickets: Cheap (we still don't know the price)

We were really impressed with the WSS Scholastic Hoops Jam banquet last night, and hope that the event is more than just an "inaugural" game.   In addition to all of the player introductions and player awards,   the evening featured some great speakers, including UCLA assistant coach Michael Holton, Willie West of Crenshaw High, who received an award as the LA City Section honorary coach, and Ron Palmer of Long Beach Poly who received a similar award as CIF honorary coach.  Barbara Feige and Dean Crowley were also honored.  Good food, good people, and a fine evening. Thanks to Jerry Silva, WSS CEO, and to the family of Warehouse Shoe Sale employees and especially to Ken Miller and James Bolden who worked so hard to make the games and the banquet come together.

Again, the concept of this game is different than any other current all-star formula. All of the players were selected because they maintained a minimum 2.7 grade point average in addition to being standout performers on the court.   The participants also did a tour on April 24 of the Challengers Boys & Girls Club in South Central LA and the Hollenbeck Youth Center in East LA where they spoke and played in front of several groups of young kids, emphasizing their roles as young leaders and role models.

Here are some of the changes and additions to the various rosters which we were advised of yesterday:

Southern Section Boys Seniors:

Added Kenny Wright (2.7 GPA)  Long Beach Poly

City Section Girls Seniors:

Added Shameika Hunphrey (2.8 GPA) Gardena High
Added Deedee Peters (2.7 GPA) Manual Arts High
Added Robin Ricks (3.0 GPA) Manual Arts High

City Section Underclassmen Boys:

Added Fauzi Abdelsamaad (6'-1" Jr. SG) from Fairfax
Added Earl Felix (6'-5" So. SG/.SF) from Manual Arts
Added Deandre Morris (6'-3" Jr. SG) from Manual Arts
Added Steve McMaryion (6'-4" Jr. SG) from Palisades

Southern Section Underclassmen Boys:

Added Ellis Myles (6'-7" Jr. PF) from Compton High
Added A.J. Diggs (5'-9" Jr. PG) from St. Anthony's

The Craven twins, Errick & Derrick won't be there since they are in Indiana with Pump N Run at the Spiece Tournament, but just about everyone else from the Southern Section was in attendance last night and will play tomorrow. The City Section underclass was short anyway, so they added a bunch of guys.  And we don't know who, if anyone dropped off the Boys' Senior game, but the addition of Kenny Wright is a good one.
