Showcase Game Next Week: Scholastic
Hoops Jam Set At LASW College--(April 23, 1999)

What:  Warehouse Shoe Sale Scholastic Hoops Jam
When: May 1, 1999
Where: LA Southwest College, corner of Vermont and Imperial Highway
Who: Boys' & Girls Senior stars and Underclassmen games
Times:  TBA

The Warehouse Shoe Sale "Scholastic Hoops Jam" is not just any old "all-star" game.  In fact, because they will have underclassmen playing in it, they won't be calling it an "all-star" game at all (in order to protect players from potentially losing eligibility, or so we hear). The games will feature LA City Section girls' and boys' basketball players against the Southern Section boys and girls (not in the same game, which would be an interesting concept, but not likely to happen any time soon, but in separate games).

City players of the year James Wright of Manual Arts and Leilani Estavan of Palisades will be among the participants.  All players in the event have to have at least a minimum 2.7 grade-point average and they also have to submit a 250-word essay as a prerequisite to playing about a hero or role model.  Prior to the game, players will also visit the Challengers Boys and Girls Club in South Central Los Angeles and the Hollenbeck Youth Center in East Los Angeles on Saturday, presumably to show younger players what can be accomplished through hard work and good grades.

There will also be a banquet at which (it has already been reported) Marlon Parmer (6'-3" Sr. PG) from Verbum Dei will make his college choice announcement.  The schools recruiting Marlon are three:  USC, UNLV, and Michigan.  Marlon has had visits at all the schools and told us last week that he will pick from among these three.

Other participants in the games will be LA City boys' players such as Ronald Cass and Brandon Moorer of Manual Arts, Jonathan Stokes, Dwayne Parker and Ryan Sims of Crenshaw, Gabriel Chipe and Brian Berumen of Franklin, Nehemiah Campbell of Washington, Edward Estavan of Palisades, Eric Knight of Westchester and Ronald Johnson of South Gate.

City girls' players are Estavan and Palisades teammate Nicole Funn, Cynthia Alex and Xena Harris of Washington, Jody-Ann Gilzene and Nicole Smith of Hamilton, Candice Baldwin of Banning, Jenice Johnson of Crenshaw, Shevonda Gordon of Gardena, Shirlee Low of Los Angeles, Chakeitha Lawson of Jordan, Robin Richs of Manual Arts, Tiffany McCollum of San Pedro, Kiarira Drummond of Westchester and Maria Barajas of Wilson.

We'll post up the full rosters for each game next week. In the meantime, if you're not going to Lafayette, Indiana for the Spiece Run N' Slam tournament at Purdue or attending any of the other local events on May 1, you'll want to be over at LA Southwest College.

See you there.
