Utah State Signs Capo Valley's Mike Stowell &
Bakersfield JC's Shawn Daniels--(April 26, 1999)

Mike Stowell (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF) from Capistrano Valley High School has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Utah State, USU head coach Stew Morrill announced Monday.  The signing was announced today in a press release issued by Mike Strauss of USU Athletics Media Relations and  published in today's edition of the Utah Herald-Journal.

Stowell was a McDonald's All-American nominee and was a first team all-county and all-CIF selection as a senior. "Mike has had tremendous success against top-level competition," Morrill said. "He is very focused about his future and understands the commitment necessary to achieve at the Division I level. Mike has the ability to play big guard or small forward. He plays the game with purpose and tenacity and is also versatile in terms of being able to score off the pass or the dribble."

Stowell, who averaged 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals as a senior, will go on an LDS mission this June before enrolling at Utah State. "I am sure that Mike will experience tremendous personal growth during his mission and we will look forward to his return," Morrill said. "His future is certainly very bright and we are happy that he has decided to become an Aggie." As a junior, Stowell was the league MVP and was a second team all-county and all-CIF selection. He set a school record for career steals during his three-year career at Capistrano Valley.

Utah State has now signed three players in the late signing period:  The Aggies inked Rashawn Thomas, a guard from Fullerton (Calif.) Junior College on April 13, and on Friday, the Aggies signed Shawn Daniels (6'-6" So. F) a two-time All-Western State Confernce selection at Bakersfield City College.  Daniels will enter Utah State as a junior and have two years of collegiate eligibility remaining.   Daniels, a 6-6, 250-pounder, was a two-time all-Western State Conference selection at Bakersfield (Calif.) Junior College. In his two-year career, Daniels averaged 17.7 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.8 blocks, and 1.7 steals per game, while shooting 59.2 percent from the field.

"We are excited to add another player to our program that not only has excellent basketball potential, but also is a quality person," commented Morrill. "Shawn is a fine young man that will represent Utah State in a positive manner. With the loss of Pharoh Davis and Donnie Johnson, we definitely need help at the post position. Shawn is very capable in the low-post and also has the skill and ability to face-up at the high-post. With dedication and hard work, Shawn has the tools to be an excellent Big West player."

Daniels, who played his high school basketball at Highland in Bakersfield, recorded 44 double-doubles in his 66-game career at Bakersfield City College and was the team's second-leading scorer in both his freshman and sophomore seasons. He registered 13 20-point games as a sophomore and scored a career-high 31 points vs. Butte College.

Congratulations to Utah State on landing two quality players and to both Mike and Shawn on picking a great University to continue their playing careers and to continue their educations.
