Jonathan Stokes Signs Letter Of
Intent With Howard University--(April 29, 1999)
Jonathan Stokes (6'-2" Sr. SG) from Crenshaw attended the WSS Scholastic Hoops Jam banquet tonight, and will play Saturday in the Senior Boys' All-Star game for the City Section team. Jonathan told us tonight that on Tuesday of this week, he signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball with Howard University.
Jonathan also told us that while he had been accepted to enroll as a freshman at both Cal and UCLA, he had not given very much serious consideration to the possibility of making it as a walk-on at either school . Jonathan confirmed that he had spoken (through an intermediary) with one of the Cal coaches about the possibility of walking on at Berkeley, but he also said that he only thought about it briefly, and "I decided to go with my first instinct" which was to sign with Howard. "I kind of thought about the other schools, like Cal and maybe UCLA, but I always knew that Howard was the best choice for me, and so I signed with them." When asked about the speculation that he might walk-on at UCLA, he told us that he first read about it on the internet this past week, but by that time had already signed his letter with Howard.
Jonathan also said he's really looking forward to playing in Washington, D.C., and is also looking forward to playing with Nick Dodson (6'-9" Sr. C) from Verbum Dei.
Congratulations to Jonathan Stokes, and to Howard University on picking up another great SoCal player.
