Jonathan Stokes Offered A Basketball
Scholarship By Howard University--(April 23, 1999)

Here's one from Mike Miller at PacWestHoops:  According to Mike, Jonathan Stokes (6'-1" Sr. PG/SG) from Crenshaw high has been offered a scholarship by Howard University.  Mike also writes that  Jonathan has already been accepted to Cal Berkeley and UCLA (as a regular student) and Mike believes that he can make either team as a walk-on, and perhaps he's right, because Jonathan is a very athletic player and an excellent shooter.

Mike also notes that Howard has already signed Nick Dobson (6'-9" Sr. C) (it's "Dobson", with a "b" not "Dodson"), and we've heard independently that the Bison are also looking at several other players from SoCal. Howard is a program which struggled somewhat last year (and that's putting it mildly), finishing 2-16, dead last in the MEAC (Middle Eastern Athletic Conference--which sounds like an Arab league, but it's not. . . it features Howard, S.C. State University,  MD Eastern Shore, Delaware State University, Coppin State, Morgan State, Norfolk State,  Bethune-Cookman College, N.C. A&T State University, Hampton University, and some schools known mostly for football, including Florida A&M), and they bombed out of the MEAC post-season tournament in the first game. Howard is a Division I school, and it's located in Washington D.C., but until a few things change in the basketball program, you just can't talk about it in the same category as a Cal or a UCLA.

There's no doubt that if Jonathan decides to go to Howard that he'll be an immediate starter for the Bison and coach Kirk Saulny, who needs all the good shooters and point guards he can get, and we'd predict that he'd be a major impact player there for the next four years.  If we hear anything further on his decision, we'll post it up.
