SoCalHoops Recruiting News

Questions, Questions, Questions. . .
Ronald Jackson Update--(April 19, 1999)

Questions abound.  We've got questions too, but here's the word on Ronald Jackson (5'-11" Sr. PG) from Compton Dominguez High:   Yesterday he told us directly, that he was going to commit to Michigan State, and that the news was for public consumption.  We're not making this up.  Now, will he change his mind?  Who knows?  Is the information accurate? Hey, we can't really be sure.  We've checked around and called our sources, and whether it turns out to be a phantom sighting, or the real thing, only time will tell.

Prior to yesterday we had not been aware that Michigan State was recruiting Ronald.  And apparently neither were some other people in Michigan.   Perhaps the Spartans aren't after all, but if not, then we'd have to say that they should be going after him: He's been one of the best kept secrets on the Dominguez team this year, having played largely in the shadows of Keith Kincade (6'-6" Sr. SF), Keith Brooks (6'-6" Jr. PF), Tyson Chandler (7'-0" So. C), and others on the State D-II Championship team.  Of course, Ronald started on that championship team, and did some very nice things, every bit as good as some of the other guards who played in yesterday's game who have signed with mid-to-high D-I schools.  He's a very quick guard, with excellent passing ability, is a great defender, and so it didn't come as too much of a stretch when he told that he was being recruited and would commit to a high D-I program.

Today, evidently in response to the post about Ronald on SoCalHoops, we've received a flood of inquiries, with lots of people saying that "it's Michigan, not Michigan State", or "he'll be staying on the West Coast",  or other such things.  We haven't been able to reach Ron today, and while we spoke briefly with his high school coach Russell Otis,  he was understandably a reluctant to speculate or comment at this point about Ron's possible recruitment.  (He did give us some other big news on another Dominguez senior who is being recruited by some big time programs, and we'll post that separately).

So, if it turns out that Ron isn't being recruited by Michigan State (or Michigan) then it's their loss, because, setting aside all this internet nonsense of trying to figure out what a 16 or 17 year old player is going to do,   the young man has a great game, and he demonstrated that yesterday at the Dada Classic. Likewise, if it turns out that Ron winds up at Michigan State, that will just show how smart Tom Izzo really is.
