adidas Rockfish Spring League:
Results From Saturday--(April 11, 1999)

We didn't get to see a lot of these games, but we caught a few as we decided to take a break from the marathon hoops-fest taking place at Cal State Dominguez Hills at the adidas Double Pump Easter Tournament.   We're too exhausted to go into any great detail, so just the scores, and maybe the high scorers, where appropriate:

9:00 a.m.  Belmont Shore 79, Rockfish Barracudas 74--  Wesley Stokes scored 18 and Tito Maddox hit for 25 for Belmont Shore.  Deverion Mackey had 16 points for the Barracudas, including three three-pointers.

10:30 a.m.  Rockfish Hammerheads 79,   Inland 84-- Anthony Davis had 18 points for the Hammerheads, while Richard Cobbs, the rising freshman (i.e., he's still in 8th grade, and the only 8th grader in the RSL) hit for 19 for Inland.  Lawrence Carrier, a freshman had 18 while Michael Hall had 24 points.

12:00 p.m.  Rockfish Hammerheads 74, Rockfish Barracudas 81-- The Hammerheads dropped their second game of the day, but Rory O'Neil the promising 6'-10" soph from Ridgecrest Burroughs had 24 points and one of the most spectacular dunks of the day.  Deverion Mackey was once again the scoring leader with 24 points for the Barracudas.

1:30 p.m. Rockfish TigerSharks 66, Rockfish Orcas 81-- Ryan Sims (6'-9" Sr. C) from Crenshaw hit for 21 points, once again proving what a valuable player he is and will be to some lucky college, and Julian Sensley had 15 and Russell Lakey hit for 10 for the Orcas who pulled out the win and advanced to the quarterfinal game.

3:00 p.m.  IEBP 98,  Rockfish Marlins 97 (OT)--  This was an unbelieveable win for the IEBP guys and a heartbreaker for the Marlins, who had it won, but for a turnover with only seconds to play in regulation, but the brightest spot was the 40 points scored by Ronald Johnson (6'-3" Sr. SG) from South Gate High, one of the best unsigned seniors around.   Jacqay Carlyle, another under-recruited and much under-rated top prospect had 17 in this game.

4:30 p.m.  Inland 80, Belmont Shore 84-- This game was, to put it bluntly, one of the worst officiated games of the entire season.   But it wasn't all the refs, and a couple of Belmont Shore guys did it again, proving that they can get thrown out of even the best places.  With only 9:10 remaining in the first half, and after scoring 9 points, Tito Maddox tried to get around Brandon Jones (at least that's who we were told it was. . . we didn't see this, so the account is second-hand.  That's hearsay to you lawyers out there), and in the process he hooked him on the way to the basket.  This resulted in a foul being called and a little pushing and shoving between the players, and rather than let things get out of hand, the refs decided to end it right there, calling double technicals, and throwing Maddox out of the game.  That was followed by Ellis Myles doing a reprise of his performance last week in Las Vegas where he was thrown out of a game:  With 7:24 to play in the first half, Ellis also got ejected for what we understand was rough play.   Again, we didn't see it, so we really don't know what happened, we only know that he got tossed and that it was with 7:24 to play.   One bright spot for Belmont was Wesley Stokes, who scored 24 points after coming off a tremendous game about an hour before this one at Dominguez Hills while playing for the Pump N Run I team which beat TPI.

6:00 p.m. IEBP95, Orcas 89 (OT)-- In the second overtime of the day, IEBP's Derek MgBeke scored 19, and Jacqay Carlyle scored 18.   For the Orcas, Lakey had 8, Nana Gbewanyo had 12, all in the second half, Dustin Villepigue had two threes (not bad for a 6'-9" guy), and Solomon Brown hit for 21 points, including five threes. Oh, and 6'-6" Jonathon Todd, J.J.'s "little" brother, all 6'-6" of him, hit a great three pointer too.

7:30 p.m.  Tiger Sharks 87, Marlins 85 -- In what could have been the third overtime of the day, and the second for the Marlins, this game, which actually didn't get started until almost 8:15 and which didn't end until after 10:00 p.m., was a great one.  Timothy Drisdom, David Gale and Skyler Wilson all moved the ball well, but it was Glenn McGowan (6'-7" Sr. SG/SF/PF)  one of the best unsigned seniors out there, who has a 2.4 GPA, but who may sit out a year in prep school, and the rest of the Tiger Sharks, including some great point play from Hassan Bassiri (6'-0" Jr. PG) from Campbell Hall.

That's it for now.  We'll do a write-up of the games we're able to see tomorrow, in between the finale of the Double Pump Easter Tournament.

See you there.
