Will Travis Reed Transfer? Time Will Tell--(April 22, 1999)
Since everyone else is reporting that Travis Reed (6'-7" So. PF) from UCLA is going to transfer, we might as well pick up on the story. It appeared yesterday on the internet on Jim Downs' UCLA website, and Jim also wrote a similar piece over at College Hoops Insiders' website (where he frequently writes). The story was then apparently picked up by Mike Miller at PacWestHoops who is reporting it as a done deal; over on WestCoastHoops, Jon Ralston is reporting it simply as "Jim Downs says" and providing a link to Downs' site. Jon Wilner in today's Daily News reports what we've all heard before, that Travis Reed is "looking around" and not seeing much playing time, so he's "considering" a transfer. Downs and Miller however are much more specific, and both say that Reed has definitely decided to transfer, and is considering several schools. Each note that it is expected he will transfer to Long Beach State, and thus will sit out one year as required and still have two years of eligibility remaining.
The Times was completely silent today on the subject, as was the Long Beach Press Telegram and the Orange County Register. Of course, it's a subject which has been previously mentioned by the P-T several times and by Frank Burlison at the Register, and rumors of Reed's unhappiness have long been known. But Downs' story is the first real solid, definitive statement that Travis has actually informed the Bruin staff that he will be leaving.
