Jerry Norley:  Arizona Spring/Pre-Summer
Player Report--The Juniors--(April 9, 1999)

Our friend Jerry Norley has graciously contributed yet another fine Arizona-oriented report.  So what's this got to do with SoCal we hear you asking.  Well quite a lot, since most of these guys will either play in SoCal this summer or will play against SoCal guys at either the Best of Summer, the adidas Las Vegas Big time, or any number of other events. Here's Jerry's report:

Now that the summer is about to begin, I'm going to hit on the top players in Arizona for all you summer tourney hoop fanatics.

Here are the JUNIORS

Jon Howard 6ft5 2G Brophy Prep
Howard is the top dog in the junior class. He is a great athlete with solid all around wing schools. He can handle the ball, drill the outside shot, or take you inside. A heady, skilled player who has the kind of all around game that the big time schools like. Best player in the junior class

Ryan Walcott 6ft3 PG Shadow Mountain
Walcott is a taller point who runs the break, handles like a smaller point, plays in control, and can either hit the jumper or take you inside to finish or dish off to the open man. A winner who will make some Pac-10 coach, hopefully ASU, a great young point.

Daryl Isaac 7ft Peoria
Isaac is a skinny shotblocker with a nice touch inside. He has solid post moves and only needs to add strength to play at the highest levels. By his junior year, could develop into a big time player, but does need time to put on weight.

Skyler Musser 6ft10 Phoenix Maryvale
This big kid plays hard and battles inside for boards and points. Not pretty but effective. Nice inside moves and solid athleticism make him a load to handle. A number of top programs will be monitoring his summer performance.

Ryan Haggerty 6ft10 Scottsdale Saguaro
Another skilled big man who with a good summer will receive numerous big time offers. Another nice inside player from this class.

Scott Watson 6ft PG Gilbert High
This quick point can drill the NBA range three in your face, drive by you and take it inside, or dish it off to an open teammate. Excellent all around point who is a winner.

Jamal Scott 6ft6 SF Shadow Mountain
Should combine with Walcott to make Shadow Mtn. one of the teams to beat this year in Arizona. Athletic wing who likes to play inside and beat you with his athletic ability and intensity. If he rounds out his perimeter skills the sky is the limit. In time, could become a solid D1 wing.

Matt Lohmeier 6ft4 2G Tucson Sahuaro
This sweet shooting two guard from Tucson has a big rep and will have this summer to justify it. Reputed to be a big time D1 prospect.

Ryan Pawling 6ft4 2G Scottsdale Chapparal
This scoring wing has put up big numbers since his sophomore year. Highly skilled wing should attract a number of West Coast Schools' attention.

Anthony Hull 6ft5 SF Peoria
Hull is a solid forward with good athleticism and skills that make him tough to stop. Had some injuries this year, look for a big summer to improve his stock with D1 coaches. A tough kid with a lot of potential.

Brent Baker 6ft4 2G Dobson High
Baker had a good junior year. He's a strong, athletic wing with a nice outside jumper. He is tough to stop inside or outside and should put up big scoring numbers. A kid who doesn't get much publicity but is ready to bust out.

Austin Ainge 6ft3 PG Highland High
Ainge keeps getting better and better. Smooth handler, deadly jumper, and at least one "Jason Williams" style circus pass per game, this kid has a lot of flash to his game, but hits the open shots and hits his teammates with excellent passes leading to open shots. Could end up being the top point from this class.

Josh Todd 6ft1 Guard Marcos De Niza
Todd is a good athlete who needs to develop more point skills to maximize his performance for the next level. Good shooter with a bright future if he continues to work on his game.

Alan Batiste 6ft2 Tucson Santa Rita
A scoring guard with a sweet jumper, solid midrange game, and is a good athlete. Looks like he could still be growing and will add weight. A sleeper who in a few years could be one of the better players in this class.

Steven Garnette 6ft5 SF Winslow
Garnette from tiny Winslow is an intense, athletic player who is tough to  stop. He battles and uses good inside moves to score at will. Want to see more of an outside game from him, but he shows great promise.

Marcus Robinson 6ft PG Mesa High
This lefty is a tough point. If you drop off of him he'll drill the three, but if you guard him close he'll drive past you and pull up midrange or take it all the way. Oh yeah, he can pass too. Tough point!

Jon Schroeder 6ft4 2G Tempe Corona Del Sol
This intense wing has a nice touch on his lefty shot and solid athleticism that allow him to take it strong to the hole and play tough D. His jumper is still inconsistent, but he can heat up in a hurry, and if his jumper is off, he'll take you inside.

Dustin Geddes 6ft7 Glendale Cactus
Solid player who put up nice numbers scoring and rebounding last year. Highly skilled and solid athlete, this summer will determine how high he is recruited.

Mark Brown 6ft Tucson Santa Rita
This skinny point has a nice handle, good outside shot, and he knows how to run the show. He lead his team to the 4A title this year over a tough Thunderbird Team. If he adds weight this kid would be rated higher. As it is, he is a mid major recruit who will continue to improve.

Mike Mason 6ft5 SF South Mountain
Mason is a tough wing who uses his athleticism and inside skills to score. Needs more of an outside game, but still tough to stop.

Matt McCAnn 6ft5 F Dobson High
Solid player who is active on the boards and battles inside to score. Needs more ball handling and outside shooting skills to make the move to the perimeter, but this hardworking kid could develop. Great student!
