L.A.High Gets Robert &
Planells, Jr.
As New Coaches--(April 8, 1999)
Telly Robert, a full-time faculty
member at Los Angeles High School who coached the JV and Fros-Soph teams last year, and
Hernando Planells, Jr., who coached the varsity girls team at L.A. last season, have been
named the new co-coaches of the boys' varsity team at Los Angeles High School. They
will have their work cut out for them, trying to re-invigorate the program which started
out with much promise this past season only to fall apart by mid-season in squabbles among
players, coaches and some parents. But they have a great core of returning players,
including Kenny Johnson (5'-10" Jr. PG) and Scottie Stern (6'-4" Jr. SF/PF), who
also plays the two but was out of position for most of the season with the LA High team
after transferring from Fairfax. Stern is currently playing in the Rockfish League,
and Johnson, who was injured in the early pre-season and is now regaining his form, is
playing in the ARC All-Star evaluation league. Planells is currently coaching the
Rockfish Marlins and will coach one of the Rockfish travel teams this summer in addition
to summer league games with his new LA High varsity squad.
